Portugal decriminalised drugs.  Yes, drugs.  All of them.
- Illegal drug usage rates amongst 16-18yos dropped (something can be illegal even when decriminalised)
- New HIV infections dropped.
- Rates of those seeking treatment for addiction increased.

And how much does this legalized drug use cost society?  I mean cigarettes are legal and they cost society lots of money.

I wouldn't have a problem with drug use if it was just yourself, but how we have to have Mothers Against Drunk and High Driving (MADHD), which messes up their MADD acronym.

We make the money back in taxation of alcohol and tobacco.

We don't make it back for other drugs. Legalise, regulate and tax, at least that way the hospital beds the damn things cost us are paid for.

If you could find a study where it shows taxation of drugs would cover the societal costs then I would seriously consider it; I'm a libertarian at heart but a social conservative to the bone.

Check out the actual rate of taxation on cigarettes. It's massive over here. Gotta be a decent revenue stream for the government. If they cost more than the cost of the hospital beds they fill, why would the government keep them around/not jack up the tax rates on them?

Illegal usage among a age grade of 2 years had dropped, but one can only assume being legal caused more people, in general, to use them.

If decriminalisation reduces the number of people using drugs or has no particular impact on the numbers then in terms of societal cost there's no change as current criminal drug use already has the societal cost.

Just the savings from not sticking huge numbers of minor drug offeners in prison will likely save billions.
