They went with songs to the battle, they were young.
Straight of limb, true of eyes, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.

In modern times we have been lucky enough to be without a world war.  That is not to say the world has been without conflict, however, for it goes without saying every ANZAC day we give but a moments thought to those brave ANZACs who have fought - and died - in our name.  Given the events of the past year, I feel it is fair to give a thought to those who put their lives at risk during the recent Australian bush fires; they who give fight, and they who put their lives on the line when no war of man is present.

Fire fighters go into combat on our behalf every day of every week of every year, without rest, without armistice, without treaty, and without ANY hope of rest.  I doubt our fallen would hesitate to share a gunfire breakfast with these hardy few.

Lest we forget.

I'm going into Sydney for the Dragons v Roosters ANZAC clash. They always play the Last Post and have a minutes silence before the game.

Most of the diggers who march end up going to the game as it is towards the end of the parade it's played.

Lets take this to AU chat.

Guys, if you want to get a bit of a feel for what trench warfare in Western Europe was like for the Aussies, try get your hands on Somme Mud by EPF Lynch.

It's an edited version of his diary. Pretty awesome, if tragic. A little disjointed due to the editing but a brilliant collection of yarns just the same.

Unfortunately i couldn't get to a dawn service today. But I did a speech and said the ode at our school ANZAC service. I think ANZAC day will take on a whole new meaning next year and onwards (when i'm in the air force)

Lest we Forget Johnny Turk, who's hospitality left an indelible mark on the Australian psyche and who's friendship in the face of invasion will never be forgotten.

The march and service in our area was great. There was a  huge turnout. Theres so much support for the diggers from Aussies, it kinda makes me proud to be Aussie.

I went to Anzac day in Gallipoli in 2000. It was an awesome experience, but I was amazed how close the trenches were to each other in some areas. The space between opposing sides was often the width of a road.

It is also impressive that there is no animosity between Australians and Turks. In fact the relations are very good. Ataturk, the Commander of 19 division, and later the much loved president of Turkey said one of the most important and noble speeches in our countries histories.

Ataturk wrote:

Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives... You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side now here in this country of ours... you, the mothers, who sent their sons from faraway countries wipe away your tears; your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. After having lost their lives on this land. They have become our sons as well.

Went to France/Belgium and saw the Somme/Ieper Salient (Ypres) and that. Pretty awesome.

Our battlefield guide, really awesome guy, was telling us about the spot where the trenches were closest on the Western Front. Literally within something like 1.5m of each other. Pretty freaky. Also went to one of the preserved areas near the Canadian national WW1 memorial. Really awesome experience.

No dork. It's the fucking HUGE one on Vimy Ridge. You know with the 15m+ high soldiers facing each other?

We had a Canadian with us on the trip so it was pretty cool seeing that with him. First thing he did there was go to one of the Canadian caretakers and ask about the NHL scores though.

Which shop you go to? We only had 4 days there and were pretty busy with the battlefield touring so we only hit up the ones near the square.

Epic pub there though. You go to that WW1 museum thing in the old tower/wheat storage building? The one they threw cats off during the middle ages.

Yeah I know the one.

We rented one of the little hotels on the square to stay in. Was pretty awesome having the whole place to ourselves.
