A slightly worrying story in "The Australian"

The Australian wrote:

CHINESE computer spies are suspected of having cracked the Pentagon's $500 billion Joint Strike Fighter program, accessing top-secret files containing details of the aircraft's stealth design and electronics.

Details of the brazen break-in were reported yesterday in The Wall Street Journal newspaper, citing current and former US government officials.

The Australian wrote:

The JSF program is the US Defence Department's costliest, and according to the WSJ, the spies were able to siphon off "terabytes of data related to design and electronics systems", potentially making it easier to defend against the stealth-protected aircraft.

"Former US officials say the attacks appear to have originated in China. However, it can be extremely difficult to determine the true origin because it is easy to mask identities online," the WSJ said.

Unnamed US officials are quoted as saying cyber attacks on military projects appear to have escalated in the past six months.
The Australian defense force will be investing in JSF's in a reasonably big way, so they are downplaying the problem.

ABC news wrote:

In a statement, the Australian Defence Department says it has spoken with US Defence officials and Lockheed Martin about the alleged breach, but says extra sensitive data is not kept on systems connected to the internet.
I dont know who is closer to the truth on this matter, however it seems that the Chinese have ramped up the Cyber warfare/hacking attacks on the rest of the world. Are they up to something?

Is there nothing we can do against these Chinese hackers? I mean, I know they're supposedly civilians, but can we not nuke China anyway?

Terabytes of data? Wow. They were not mucking around.

And to lose that much is absolutely embarrassing.

Probably cant nuke China.
Chances are that most other nations have Hackers working for them as well. Maybe they are just skillfull enough to not get caught. In any case these are pretty brazen attacks. I guess Australia is worried because we have ordered about 100 of the JSF.

lolz. And we can get someone who isn't affiliated with the government to do it, so we can hide behind that and pretend we had nothing to do with it like those cunts have been doing all along with this hacking shit.

Difference is, civilians can have advanced computer equipment, but nukes?....

I said it before and say it again - I personally have to block IP's from China on my Internet Router at home. China and Internet are bad news to U.S. computers.

If they can hack into the USA they can pretty much hack into anything. I think it's time the USA invested abit more in quantum computing and all that quantum encryption etc..

No "top secret" data was exfiltrated. The targeted systems were not DoD systems. The targeted systems were not classified systems. No classified data regarding the F-35 was compromised.

"Terabytes of data" is irrelevant. Which data was taken? Can that data be used to glean classified information about the F-35? Possibly, but simply saying "terabytes of data were exfiltrated" and then act like that in and of itself is some measure of effectiveness is simply wrong. If they exfiltrated terabytes of LockMart corporate administrivia, it doesn't amount to jackshit.

This is old news, tbh. Certainly there are some things that need to be fixed to address the root causes of this, and they are being/have been addressed. The over-the-top treatment from the press, well after the fact, is humorous.

I gotta admit there has been a lot of "Chinese Hackers" stories in the news lately. I guess nothing sells papers like a good spy story.

"Terrabytes of data is not irrelevant" ? What a stupid comment to make. That hackers could break into a system and download such a large amount of data whether it is critical or not is still an unwarranted loss of data and for terrabytes to be taken is a very clear indication that the data was taken over a long period of time and not a simple breach.

Such a hack went undetected for so long, it is incredibly embarrassing that so much data was taken without authorisation.

While true, if it was open source or unclassified information, it doesn't matter THAT much.

It's a shame that our government refuses to pay for quality programmers to prevent this kind of thing from happening.

Even the most sophisticated hacker can't beat that.
Now, why in world is sensitive data like this being stored on a network with access to the outside.... that's just stupid.

I have no doubt that these facilities have guards, fences, barb wire, moats, booby traps and dragons protecting them.... and along comes a Chinese computer geek and steals probably billions of dollars worth of strategic secrets.

You know that the Chinese will have knock off F-35s in a matter of weeks now
