(CNN) -- Fourteen thoroughbred horses dropped dead in a mysterious scene Sunday before a polo match near West Palm Beach, Florida, officials said.

Teams are trying to figure out what happened at the International Polo Club Palm Beach in Florida.

State and local veterinary teams are trying to figure out what happened at the International Polo Club Palm Beach in Wellington, Florida, as team Lechuza Caracas prepared to compete in a U.S. Open match.

Two horses initially collapsed, and as vets and team officials scrambled to revive them, five others became dizzy, said Tim O'Connor, spokesman for the polo club.

"A total of seven died on our property," O'Connor told CNN. Seven other horses died en route to a Wellington horse farm and a veterinary hospital.

The cause of the deaths has not been determined, and necropsies and blood tests were underway, he said.

O'Connor said each team brings between 40 to 60 horses for matches, and they are continuously switched out throughout a match to keep the horses from overexerting themselves.

A meeting will be held to determine whether Lechuza Caracas will compete at a later date, he said.

"Everybody is kind of in shock and trying to figure out what happened," he said. "Nobody can recall an incident in which this many horses have died at once."

Is doping common with polo ponies? I would guess that someone gave these horses a bad dose of something for that many horses to drop dead. They should have stuck with rubbing tiger balm on the bung hole.... I've it done in horse racing to wake the horse up.

"Some died right away. Others lasted about 45 minutes," said veterinarian Scott Swerdlin, a member of the Palm Beach Equine Clinic who was at the scene and said 14 horses died.

The Lechuza Caracas team was scheduled to play Sunday in a match as part of the U.S. Open Polo Championship at the International Polo Club Palm Beach, on 120th Avenue South. Each polo team typically brings about 24 horses to a match.

The horses began breathing heavily and stumbling at the Lechuza equestrian facility before they were brought to the polo club, Swerdlin said he was told.

If the necropsies show the horses were illegally drugged, the Florida Department of Agriculture will conduct an investigation, polo club spokesman Tim O'Connor said. The United States Polo Association likely also would conduct an investigation, O'Connor said.

At the highly competitive level of the Wellington tournament, distributing "cocktails" to horses prior to matches to enhance their performance is a common practice, said several polo experts. The steroid-like chemicals are given to horses mixed with their water or can be administered by needle, the sources said.

According to several sources, the horses had a reaction to a steroid derivative that may have been tainted with a cleaning solution, the Sun Sentinel reported. The shots apparently were administered by an Argentine vet not licensed in the U.S., it further reported.

At least three more horses were affected.

One 10-year-old mare was gravely ill late Sunday afternoon. She was lying in a stall under the care of the medical staff at the Lechuza facility.

"They started getting dizzy," O'Connor said of the scene at the polo club. "They dropped down right onto the grass."

The horses, sprawled by the field, were obscured by blue tarps as teams of veterinarians worked feverishly to revive them. Most of the spectators were unaware of the horse's illness."

Competitive sports is like that...sad.  I wonder if it'll take a 'bad cocktail' in our professional sports before we clean it up?

Pharlap was worth more than 14 polo horses m8.

We'd have to poison over half the USA's total stock of horses to get them back for Pharlap. You seen the heart down in Canberra? Frickin HUUUGE.

Maybe its a type of equine encephalitis virus. Maybe even the one GS was talking about. Still its really weird that they would all pretty much die at once.

21 polo horses die mysteriously in Florida

The world of polo is anxiously awaiting the results of laboratory tests to help reveal how 21 horses from a Venezuelan team died suddenly in a mystery outbreak that has left the sport in shock. The horses from the Lechuza Caracas team were due to appear in yesterday's semi-final of the US Open in Florida, the most high-profile event in the American polo calendar and a highlight of the international circuit.

At about 2.15pm, two horses fell in their trailers as they were being unloaded before the match. Others showed signs of dizziness, breathing heavily, before finally collapsing.

As they fell, grooms and vets rushed to treat the animals, spraying them with water to cool them and administering intravenous fluids. But their efforts were in vain: all horses that showed signs of illness died.

Fourteen horses died on Sunday, and a further seven passed away overnight, wiping out almost the entire team that had been brought to the tournament.

The carcasses of the 21 dead horses were transported to laboratories around Florida for testing, and the results are expected to take several days.

Terence McElroy, a spokesman for the Florida department of agriculture which is leading the investigation into the deaths, would not be drawn on possible causes. "We pretty much have an open mind - we simply want to get to the bottom of it," he said.

Speculation focused on the possibility of toxic shock, which would explain the symptoms displayed by the horses of dizziness, water in the lungs and cardiac arrest.

If so, that would lead investigators to ask what caused the reaction. It could be explained by contaminated food or water, which would raise the issue of whether the toxin was mistakenly or consciously given to the animals.

Vet James Belden, who was at the scene, told NBC: "Clearly it's an intoxication ... there's some sort of a poison."

Further attention will fall on whether the animals were given any performance enhancing fluids before the match. It is not uncommon at this highest level of the sport for horses to be given cocktails of fluids, similar to steroids, though steroids themselves are banned in some circuits, including at British competitions.

John Walsh, president of the International Polo Club Palm, where the tournament was being held, said: "Our hearts go out to team Lechuza Caracas and hope that a speedy answer can be obtained."

Dawn Redman, a commentator on the sport who lives in Florida, added: "The polo world is shocked. These were beautiful and absolutely magnificent ponies, trained to a very high standard."

The deaths are a particularly hard blow for Victor Vargas, the multimillionaire Venezuelan businessman who owns and plays for Lechuza Caracas. Not only has he lost some of his best horses, the future of the team could be greatly affected as the dead animals included several mares that would have carried the side's next generation.

All the animals were aged 10 or 11, rendering them at their prime. Several were thoroughbred Argentinian horses, considered the best for polo, and worth more than $100,000 (£67,0000) each.

so the cause was vitamins.  a higher, botched up dose of potassium, to be exact.  one of my friends' dad or uncle (can't remember) owns the track there or something.
