Today about 2.3 percent of the world's population identifies themselves as atheist, and nearly 12 percent more (a number that is quickly growing) describe themselves as nontheist - non-believers in any deity.

what's different between an 'atheist' and a 'nontheist'?

Hmm... Stephen Hawking doesn't fall into what I usually think of as 'atheism'. He's a nice example of the difference between an atheist and a deist/nontheist.

It doesn't seem like the creator put a lot of thought into that, just kinda found 50 people who sound like geniuses so he could prove atheists are smarter than everyone else...or something.

World's population, it's higher in the western world, and much lower in developing parts

But still, I'm sure figures I've seen put atheists in the UK at only 12% or something, and even lower in the States.

Well, what defines an atheist?  Chinese Buddhists and Confucians don't believe in a supreme deity, but are a significant percentage of the global population.

The percentage in the states is steadily rising though, and that's a good thing in my personal opinion.
