Yes, but I'm against succession, rebellion, and civil war. At these times you don't need any lunatics with guns doing anything stupid.

I read one of the books and saw the three movies. I'd say that the irony is what makes it funny.

Personally, I might be supportive of the anti-bailout tea party crowd, but there is too much other mumbo jumbo mixed in to show these guys any support.

"But if Washington continues to thumb their nose at the American people, you know, who knows what might come out of that." (from the article)

Texas is never gong to secede anyway. Last I checked, the November election was a landslide, look at the election results for Texas

Texas
McCain 4,479,328 55%
Obama 3,528,633 44%

There's no way that the 44% of Texas that voted for Obama are going to go along with the unpatriotic nutjob fervor.

I guess that's difference between democrats and republicans. After the 2000 election democrats went into a depression, where after 2008 the republicans appear to be getting all angry. Both had difficulites accepting the results of the elections.

Perhaps after this support group meeting dealing with anger, the losers can move on to stage 4 of grief "4. "DEPRESSION", REFLECTION, LONELINESS"

"Texas is a unique place. When we came into the union in 1845, one of the issues was that we would be able to leave if we decided to do that," Perry said. "My hope is that America and Washington in particular pays attention. We've got a great union. There's absolutely no reason to dissolve it. But if Washington continues to thumb their nose at the American people, who knows what may come of that."

Both Democrats and Republicans attended the tea parties... Today they were all Americans that are fed up with being taxed like never before with no accountability by the self serving senators and congressmen...  And the people that say that paying excessive taxes makes you patriotic... are morons of the highest order...

and it's a free country... having an opinion does not make you a nutjob... it's fools that except things as they are and keep their head in the sand that will be the help make this country weaker and poorer...     2010 and 2012 cant come soon enough... Jimmy Carter 2.0 isn't working...

and if Texas does secede... It's time to move to Texas... It would be really interesting watching the rest of the country go down the drain with all the entitled folks and what they are owed...  Who's going to pay for them to sit around when all the Taxes of the achievers dries up... Like it's happening in NY...

Indeed, Gov Perry's comments have nothing to do with the fact that Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison plans to run against him in the next gubernatorial race.

Perhaps when the Republicans reach stage 7 of grief "7. ACCEPTANCE & HOPE" may be they will find their Obama.
It almost seems contrived that Obama's campaign slogan is the seventh and final stage of grief.

Anyway for the record, I like to see people/Republicans out on the street demonstrating, its good for the ol codgers to get out a stretch their legs.
BTW its also nice to see that the police aren't attacking the demonstrators like they usually do.

Hmmmmm civil liberties returning??? there may be hope for "U.S." yet.

Well, at least people are thinking about things.

The states which have mentioned secession in the past couple years are all Western/Midwestern...rather interesting split, IMO.  I seriously doubt many are talking about secession, but some are seeing parallels.  (While I think history is somewhat cyclic, it does not repeat itself exactly, so parallels can be drawn all day without real action taking place.)

As for the military, we take an oath to the Constitution. Dot. Period. End of story.

He said when Texas entered the union in 1845 it was with the understanding it could pull out. However, according to the Texas State Library and Archives Commission, Texas negotiated the power to divide into four additional states at some point if it wanted to but not the right to secede.

Texas did secede in 1861, but the North’s victory in the Civil War put an end to that.

Difficult considering how much it varies. For instance my state doesn't even have an income tax.. sales tax can vary drastically from county to county (as can property). Most of the figures you hear are just the federal tax, or just a poorly backed estimate.. which is much lower than what we pay in total.

Texas is a highly productive state.  In terms of economics, they represent a huge portion of our tech and oil businesses, and Houston has one of the most important ports in the whole country.

Needless to say, any serious threats of secession will be put down rather quickly by the U.S. Military.

Now, I'm not saying that I'm necessarily against letting Texas secede, but there's no way our government would allow that to happen.
Who is to say they wouldn't AGREE?  A very sizable portion of the Army calls Texas home, after all.
Well, I'd imagine most people who join the military have a strong support for the Union.  I mean that in modern terms, not in reference to the Civil War.

I mean, sure, there are a myriad of reasons to enlist, but I would think a certain amount of programming is involved that naturally causes most servicemen to be loyal to maintaining the integrity of the Union.

It's kind of their job, you know?

Now, I wouldn't be surprised if some sort of insurrection occurred within the military that would sympathize with a seceding Texas, but that splinter group would likely be greatly outnumbered by the rest of the military.

In short, it would be bloody as hell and would take many years to completely resolve itself, but in the end, the Union would remain intact.
Actually, the oath is to "protect and defend the Constitution of the United States".

If the government is walking all over the Constitution (not saying this Administration is...purely hypothetical), wouldn't it be the military's duty to do something about that, per the oath?

Ironic that Texas has no state income tax then, isn't it?
