Bullshit.

I live thar.

One, You'll get Diarrhea for a year if you drink the water in a river.  Remember fish fuck and shit there.
Two, Its filled with fucking tards from California that migrate north to view the foilage and animals.
Three, its an outdoor's man paradise, if you're into hunting, fishing, hikings, skiings, snowmobiling, trail riding etc.

Glacier National Park> Yellowstone National Park.

The Going to the Sun highway is f'n amazing.
Alaska and Montana are my two home states.  Live in Montana, born in Alaska.
Both have some stunningly beautiful scenery, excellent hunting & fishing, and enough wilderness to get away from civilization for as long as you like.
Alaska is much better in all respects, but the wilderness is correspondingly less forgiving, and the animals are bigger.

Alaska:  unofficial state bird - the giant f'ing blood sucking mosquito.
Montana: unofficial state bird - the giant California yuppie loon, migrates to Western Montana seasonally, buys up property, infects local government with Californication Syndrome.  Still no official hunting season on them, unfortunately.

It's not so much just "changing politics".
Californians have turned their state into a concrete wasteland, with insane taxes, lunatic laws, and a host of problems.
Now they want to come to our states, and change it to be more like their state?
Oh, fuck off!.
We've kept our states clean & beautiful, kept our state sales tax to 0% (Alaska & Montana both), and kept our laws & culture oriented towards the independent minded people that have lived here all their lives.

Californication Syndrome turned California into a bankrupt shithole.
Do NOT try and bring that same locust plague to my beautiful home states.
Californians should stay home and fix their own bullshit, before their Traveling Locust Roadshow decides to move to cleaner lands.

You chose Cali as self sufficient when they're begging for federal money and Alaska as needing more fed help when they are refusing part of the stimulus. Funny.

Just the opposite.

Montana/Wyoming area has enough geothermal energy to power all of the North American continental electrical grid indefinitely. (Yellowstone Caldera).

Also, Montana has enough coal to power our (USA) transportation infrastructure for the next 50 to 100 years, if we switched to diesel/kerosene type fuels. (Fischer-Tropsh coal-to-fuel type process)

And, Montana is a net exporter of food crops (Grains, vegetables, etc.) and beef.
I've heard that Montana produces enough grain crops to feed the USA entirely, but I've not seen numbers to substantiate that claim though.
Unlike the above mentioned geothermal and coal information, which I've seen plenty enough information on.

As far as Alaska goes, it has more than enough oil reserves to sustain a net export cash flow, if it were considered as an independent entity apart from the USA.  Plenty enough farmland & dairy/ranch industry to supply the needs of the local population too.  Shorter crop growing season in the summer there, but the nearly 24/7 daylight during the summer does good things for crops during that season.

California, however, has way too many people, too little agricultural industry, and (most importantly) generally don't know how to survive once the supermarket shelves go empty.

Finally,
People in Alaska & Montana grow up learning how to hunt, shoot, fish, survive in the wilderness, brew our own beer, reload our own ammo..  for fun!  On the practical side, we grow up learning how to grow gardens (or farms), tend horses or cattle, build houses, run heavy construction equipment (bulldozers, etc), and generally lead self-sufficient lives.  If we don't know how to do something ourselves, there's probably someone we know nearby that does know.

People living in urban areas generally know .. what?  How to use a computer, write out TPS reports (w/ coversheets), and phone ahead for reservations at their favorite restaurants?

No, dear Londoner, us Red Staters would fare just fine on our own.  It's the blue states that need the red states, NOT the other way around.
We won't even mention where the majority of the military comes from... (>cough< red states)

Not enough to be self-sufficient.

Northern California has dairyland, farmland, cattle ranching, and a world-class wine region.

Still not enough to feed all you hungry Inland Empire urban dwellers.

If California had to survive on just California's products, you all would have some cool computers, but you'd be out of food, water, and electricity within a month.

At least in 2007,  cali was the United States #1 agricultural exporting state

From that link;
Total acres farmland: CA-25,364,695  Montana-61,388,462
Total acres cropland: CA-9,464,647    Montana-18,241,710
Agricultural output(gross), in dollars CA- $39,094,080,000  Montana- $3,371,879,000

Population- CA-36,756,666  Montana- 967,440

So, we've got twice as much farmland or cropland, but 1/36th the people.

California shows up as having a much higher gross agricultural output, in dollars (?!)
But, per capita agricultural output, that works out to $1063.59 per Californian and $3485.36 per Montana resident.

I can get by on $3485.36/year worth of grains, vegetables, and beef (plus intake from hunting & fishing).
Not so sure about how well you're going to do on $1063.59/year worth of fruits, nuts, wine, and cheese.

@ RDX - I remember reading that Montana has been the largest recipient of federal aid per capita out of any state for a while now - I think since the '70s or so when mining and timber industries started being heavily regulated.  I'll have to check the book when I get home, because I'm at work right now.  That being said, having the potential for all these great things doesn't equal much if the infastructure is not there, especially for things such as geothermal and petroleum production, seeing as the start-up costs are huge.  Of course, I'm all for investing huge amounts of capital into those ventures, especially because the cost-benefit is so obviously recognizable.

Federal Aid also goes to the 7 Native American reservations in Montana.  I know for a fact that if you're an enrolled member of one of those tribes and past the age of 18, you recieve a "sorry we stole your land and killed your ancestors" check every 1st and the 15th. It is indeed federal money, not state and we're not talking 100 dollars either.  I'll have to do some digging or ask a few of my co-workers how much they get a month.

Road work is also a big ticket item here, Federal pays alot of the costs.

interesting none the less.

My relatives that have proved their bloodline get about $1000 a month, but it is distributed by the tribes themselves, not the govt.  Most of the money is casino money.  However, my cousin did go to college with the federal government footing the bill.  I could probably prove my bloodline as well, but from what I hear from my uncle the tribes themselves are getting batshit crazy kicking out families and stuff.  It's getting really sleazy, probably because of the amount of money the tribe is making now.

Yeah, I can do the same but the money here doesn't come from Casinos, as the two on the reservations here barely pull in enough money to pay their employee's and the powerbill.

And I found a paper I had to write about all this garbage from college, (i had to take a Native American studies course..... *LAME*)  You have to be an Enrolled Member (prove your bloodline) and own land.
