This month has already been crazy in terms of those pirates doing their dastardly deeds.

They've managed to capture a fuck load of ships in something like a week.

The latest one is a ship with 20 American crew.

Policing such a big area is pretty much impossible unless countries decide to devote their entire Navy to the problem, Why can't the International forces in the area just pound the damn land bases instead, you can't go and nab all the drug dealers but you can raid the stash house. Surely there comes a time when enough is enough.

At least just give the damn crew something to defend themselves with, and for gods sake, if you're going to have security guards at least arm them (referring to that thread before about the unarmed Brit guards who jumped overboard when the pirates came)

Commercial ships won't or can't carry guns. Part of the reason is that the countries where these ships are supposed to port won't permit the importation of weapons so they aren't allowed on the ships. For example its highly illegal to carry firearms into Mexico (which is another joke entirely)

Although some ships do carry weapons, I heard that Israel comerical ships do, one story was about striking dock workers in the port of Houston before the days of containerized shipping who were walking down the pier and the Israelis freaked out and thought they were under attack so the started to uncover all the machine guns on their decks... apparently it was almost a massacre.

I wonder if there would be a real market for private protection ships to escort these ships. All you would need are few old warships and some helicopters equipped with machine guns. And a friendly port to rearm. I smell business plan.

Yeah I mean you'd think these would be the times where the PMC's would thrive, at least as onboard security (gotta wait abit until they get full blue water capabilities)

Then again, you can tell by just looking at the countries of where most of the crew of these ships usually come from to see that the shipping countries don't really give a fuck and just want to maximise profit, so they'd rather run the cheap gamble rather than, pay for insurance, you could say

I feel incredible confusion when these pirates believe we, the Western world, have wronged them by killing 3 of their fellow pirates while they were holding a hostage and demanding a ransom. Do they seriously believe that we're in the wrong for not forfeiting the multimillion dollar ransom?

Regardless, I think maybe now we'll see some action in Somalia. I want a picture of the damage on the ship.

Somali pirates continue to thumb their noses at the world -- hijacking four more ships, even as America's top military commander told ABC News the U.S. is reviewing its options, including whether to go into pirate villages.

The pirates have now seized four ships since the dramtic rescue of American Capt. Richard Phillips on Sunday, who was taken hostage during a failed hijacking attempt.

Just as the cheers were dying down for the daring rescue of Phillips that left three pirates dead, Somali pirates swooped down on more victims. This time they struck in the Gulf of Aden along the north coast of Somalia.

Two Egyptian fishing boats were hijacked, according to Egypt's Foreign Ministry, which said the boats carried a total of 18 to 24 Egyptians.

The biggest overnight prize for the pirates were the capture of the Greek freighter M.V. Irene and a Togo-flagged freighter named the Sea Horse, according to NATO officials. The Irene had a crew of 22. There was no immediate information on the Sea Horse crew.

Its ok im safe here in the gulf. We havie training available to us that our companies pay for. Small arms training. And we have security drills quite a bit. I've never sailed that part of the world, wouldn't want to, but I feel for those fellow merchant marines lives. When I sailed overseas as a cadet we had a gun locker in the lounge, and the captain had the key. Im sure all mariners are on alert and have been when sailing over there. I know some guys who went to work for maersk, and they pay good money. I hope these pirates learn not to fuck with american flagged vessels or they will get their asses and heads shot off

They say one of the reasons they do this is because other people keep illegally fishing in their waters. If this stopped do you think it would stop piracy?

It's hard to tell if killing them skinnies was a good move or not. I mean no one has been harmed properly until now. Now the skinnies have promised revenge on anyone they capture from the U.S or France.

I mean surely that means we need to take these fuckers seriously and just wipe them out so there is no civilians harmed.
