you seem to think we were invited.  i see nothing in your link that mandates any action at all.  all i see is post invasion stuff.  i would buy that if they were asking in lets say 1998...
I seem to recall that there was an article in Jane's to the effect that a plan to remove the Taliban from Afghanistan by force was being worked on well before 9/11.

9/11 just accelerated the process somewhat.

i am sure that was the case after the embassy bombings, khobar, and the cole stuff.  but, i dont remember any mandate or invitation so to speak.  i know they let spec ops roam free, but, thats a whole different animal.

UN Resolutions and Mandates take time.

I've been searching for something about Afghanistan pre-9/11, but what with the t'internets inability to remember anything for more than a year or two, I can't.

However, I remember pre-9/11 reading/seeing plenty about how the Afghan government were crying out for help and the international community appeared to be doing nothing.

Then 9/11 happened.

And the world changed.

No they weren't.

The Taliban became powerful enough to be able to say "we're in charge now", and the Afghan government said "yeah, okay, please don't hurt us", whilst texting their mates from 'big school' saying "help, we're being bullied"...

The Taliban were never the government.

Taliban were De Facto Government but not Official Government. The only countries that recognised them (Taliban) were Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, I think. Maybe some other ones.

There was no real official government anyway, after the Soviets fucked off the Soviet puppet Afghan government was pretty much destroyed by the Mooj's and then factions within those Mooj's had a civil war as is common when there's a power vacuum and the Taliban came out on top whilst the other side managed to hold some areas up norf, they were known as the Northern Alliance who were on the good team

After 9/11 the US et all rolled into town with the Northern Alliance and so most of them managed to take over the rest of Afghanistan and become what is today the Government of Afghanistan, I think their current President (or is it Prime Minister, whatever) Hamid Karzai was a member of the Northern Alliance

It's just brown rocks and some more brown rocks...How could you like that?

Either way seeing that the Afghanistan goverment just yesterday was proposing to add a law that basicly made raping wives possible I don't really care what state the country is in.

USA or someone needs to get it changed. Or someone at least. Women ALSO got lots of more rules like, you need to have the permission from your husband to go out, go out buying things, visit the doctor and so on.

Is this country goverment sick?

As for the Opium farmer complaining about his crops. SCREW YOU. You are growing OPIUM! Probably selling it to lots of other countries and poisoning them to. So much for being Holy land I suppose.
Pity the troops didn't accidentially dropped a large firebomb on the crops.

SASR grows em allatime bro. I got a book with plenty of pics of the SASR in Afghanistan with beards.

Zefar...

1) Afghanistan is not a holy land in anybody's books. The local ethnic groups have a fierce attachment and sense of belonging to it though.

2) The bulk of the sleeping poppy crops from Afghanistan are used to create heroin, which is then smuggled into Russia via the old silk road and gradually makes its way to the rest of the western world from there. Can you blame them for growing a crop that sells? Btw heroin is causing more problems in Afghanistan than anywhere else. I've heard some bad stories coming out of Kabul about addiction problems.

3) If you can't appreciate the beauty of a country like Afghanistan I pity you. It has some of the most awesome scenery in the world imo. I'd love to see the mountains there in person. Pity its so bloody dangerous.

4) It's a different culture dude. We percieve it as a terrible violation of the basic rights of the human being, they grew up with it. They must find aspects of Western Society abhorrent, if I had to think of one off the top of my head I'd say it would be the obesity problems we have. We can try to show them how wrong it is to treat women like animals but it will take time to change a culture that's been there for hundreds of years.

The first one's the best, they always talk about how those walls and houses are so strong that even the 30mm struggles to get through

I remembered someone saying that about some of the towns/forts they built

Now that the 'War on Terror' has shifted to Afghanistan, now what?
Isn't it the 'War On People Who Disagree With Us, Whatever Mud Hut Thousands Of Miles Away They Might Reside In'...? Perhaps we should force them to leap forward through a few centuries of political, social and economic development a bit harder than we have been to date. It can't be that hard for them, eh? We do have plenty of money to throw at the problem after all. Rumour has it they're filling a gigantic wooden boat full of stone projectiles and heading for a full force land invasion on Myrtle Beach... it'll be D-Day all over again...
