DETROIT – General Motors Corp. Chairman and CEO Rick Wagoner will step down immediately at the request of the White House, administration officials said Sunday. The news comes as President Obama prepares to unveil additional restructuring efforts designed to save the domestic auto industry.

The officials asked not to be identified because details of the restructuring plan have not yet been made public. On Monday, Obama is to announce measures to restructure GM and Chrysler LLC in exchange for additional government loans. The companies have been living on $17.4 billion in government aid and have requested $21.6 billion more.

Wagoner's departure indicates that more management changes may be part of the deal, but it is still unclear who will be put in charge of GM. The automaker recently promoted Fritz Henderson, its former chief financial officer, to become president and chief operating officer. Many in the company thought he would eventually succeed Wagoner.

Detroit-based GM issued a statement Sunday saying only that the company expects a decision by the administration soon but that "it would not be appropriate for us to speculate on the content of any announcement."

A person familiar with Chrysler's management said the company has been given no indication that the government will require any changes at the Auburn Hills, Mich., company, which has been led by former Home Depot chief Robert Nardelli since August 2007. The person also spoke on condition of anonymity because Obama's plan has not been made public.

I was thinking the SAME thing.  If its too big to fail, then split it up...we did it with AT&T in the 80s...

That's what one of my professors said that companies need to do when they're losing money each quarter. He says they need to bring in a dynamic new guy to rattle a few cages.

No, don't say anything bad about Obama's unions.  They are not to blame.  This man knows not what he says.  Forgive him Obama, please forgive him.

In a serious tone:  The unions were there and took advantage of the situation.  The leaders of the company were irresponsible in their dealings with the union and let things get out of hand.  I blame the leaders of the company and should be dealt with by the company.  If they don't, and the company fails, oh well.

Edit:  Spelling failure.

If they want to borrow billions of dollars from the govt then sure , the govt should have a significant say in the restructuring of the company.
However as it happens Wagoners leaving wasnt a demand of the govt, it was a recommendation though.

ABC news wrote:

A White House official said Mr Wagoner's departure was not a "quid pro quo" for receipt of a fresh infusion of federal funds.

"To characterise it as a quid pro quo would not be accurate. It was not as if an ultimatum was issued," the official said, adding however that the top GM executive was strongly encouraged to leave.
I dont get it guys. On one hand you complain that Obamas govt is giving money out carelessly to any company. Then when they put significant criteria on the money they give out, you complain about that too. These car companies need  a massive shake up to survive, and if they want govt money they have to do what it says. Whats the problem with that.

It's obvious that some govt control is needed in order to sure everything up. Possibly they can help speed the recovery and then sell back all the assets to private firms when we're good again. Though, I really wouldn't think the govt would give up control once they have it.

I still don't get why they call it socialism.  Most of what Obama has done is actually corporatism.
