Once again I am back here after a year looking for some help. My current setup is:

E6600 @ 2.4 ghz
Asus P5B-E mobo
2gb of OCZ PC6400 DDR2
Leadtek 7950 Gt 512mb

Currently this rig is having alot of probelms with the video card artifacting, and just general freezing from playing games like bf2. This happens even at LOW settings, which makes think theres somethin wrong with the card itself. I've reinstalled drivers (did use driver cleanup) and that didn't solve the problem. If anyone knows another solution that'd be great, otherwise I am looking for a new video card in the $200 price range.

Getting artifacts would point towards a dying GPU or an underpowered / unstable PSU

What PSU do you have?

Otherwise a GTX260 Core 216 is a good choice for $200 A HD4870 or HD4850 is a good choice for 200CAD. Again the PSU could be a problem though

Sounds like it's dying.

Have you tried blowing out the heatsink?

Also get us the temps of your card idle and on load.

If this doesn't help, I would suggest this card. (Yours is a bit outdated)

This does have a 2 year warranty, keep that in mind when purchasing.

Essentially the same thing that Sniper posted, but $50 less

I have it. Good card, dunno about OCing capabilities though

What are load temps?

From what I've read, 60 is little higher than normal, but not too much so.

As CrazeD correctly implies temp under load are the important ones.

Also, silicon doesn't start degrading 'till around 90 or so (though, one point to note is that temp readouts are a kind of 'average' temperature - parts of the chip will be hotter, parts not so hot - so that doesn't mean <90 is necessarily 'OK').

If it doesn't go above around 75 under load then it's fine.

I have had 99c load temps on HD 2900XT and two GTX 295s... its all right if its stable 85-90c max for 7950 tho...

edit: download asus probe and monitor voltages under load.

I run my GTX295 @ 103°C. 2°C below critical shutdown temp - something I've triggered loads of times

hmm...

either my 'knowledge' about silicon degrading above 90 summat is wrong, or they're doing some fancy assed shit with GPUs these days if they survive those kinds of temps.

It definitely degrades when it gets to those temps but I have a good warranty. If it dies I'll just exchange it for a new one

Ive run a 7300GT without a working fan at 112C stable(believe crit temp is 115-117C according to the log when it randomly shutoff on me)for several hours playing Far Cry whilst my 4850 was sent back for some repairs.  No idea if it was good  thing for the card, but she still runs, even If I'm too cheap to pay for a replacement fan.

Maybe it shows that all these people who swear by Evga are right, then again the $20 charge to ship it back to them for repairs for a $5 fan make me think otherwise

Blowing out the heatsink helped my 7800GToc immensely.  Canned air ftw.  Otherwise, hey, good excuse to upgrade to the new gen cards.
