Ugh trendy? Did you just choose to disregard the second sentence? I doubt any truly religious person would deny their God in public in order to be trendy.

I wasn't baptized as a child because my parents wanted me to choose what religion, if any, I wanted to believe in. I haven't been particularly swayed by any religion, and as such I'm an atheist. It's not a matter of fitting in, it's a matter of simply being what I am.

But children growing up with religious parents would turn to atheism solely to go against their parents, and their friends would be compelled to do likewise.

What's a matter, did you just realize that claiming to be an atheist without having read the Bible means your whole point of view is based on ignorance?

Nice assumption there. I went to CCD every week till I was confirmed. I know plenty about the bible. I was asking which version would edition are we going to go by? So many different branches of Christianity and so many things taken out of the bible and other stuff added. It gets confusing which version is generally accepted.

Seriously though, I think you are under estimating other people's ability to make up their own minds on things and assuming how everyone works based on some philosophy books you've read.

You highly underestimate the influence of parents on their children.

Don't think it's trendy.  I think it's the default choice now.
Where in previous generations, people were generic Christians by default, the current generation of Americans is probably Atheist or Agnostic by default.
