Let's count the ways.

1)President to sign measure, which GOP says is irresponsible.
"the bill was written mostly over the course of last year, with support from key Republicans"

2) ...Obama to sign, announce steps at curbing penchant for pet projects.
"chock-full of lawmakers' per projects"

3) "If it had not been for the stimulus and the budget proposal it might have been ... noncontroversial," said House GOP leader John Boehner of Ohio. "The stimulus bill riled an awful lot of people up. ... And then the budget proposal comes out."
Welcome to the minority.

4) The bill was written over the course of last year, with support of key Republicans such as Minority Leader Mitch McConnel and Lamar Alexander #3 republican.  They sponsored/co-sponsored $76M of per projects not requested by W.  Alexander obtained 36 earmarks for $32M during the same time.
"Alexander supported the measure in the end; McConnell did not".
what's wrong with it now again?

5) Democrats had long feuded with Bush over domestic appropriations levels and stopped action on the nine bills last year, gambling that Obama would win the election and restore hundreds of cuts proposed by Bush.
"Appropriated spending for 2008 was $1.2 trillion; Obama's budget for next year calls for $1.3 trillion in appropriations."

6) Congress also awarded itself a 10 percent increase in its own budget...
I guess to keep ahead of the unemployment rate.

7) And, to the embarrassment of Obama — who promised during last year's campaign to force Congress to curb its pork-barrel ways — the bill contains 7,991 earmarks totaling $5.5 billion, according to calculations by the Republican staff of the House Appropriations Committee
"the bill was written mostly over the course of last year, with support from key Republicans..."
also, lets not forget forcing Congress to curb the fat during the campaign...

Okay, so if I get this right, the GOP supported this during Bush, the Dems opposed it.  The Dems claim victory now, and the GOP is a jilted lover.

Makes sense to me.

Ps. There's some good stuff in there...not all bad.

I think I'd respect a veto

Republicans didn't stick to their supposed "small government ideals" very well.  Now, they want to attack the Democrats for their big government ideas...I'm looking for a word.  I think it starts with an H...

Neos spend.. you should know that by now.

In 1991 there were 546 earmarks in appropriations bills. Today, nearly 9,000

What we have is one behemoth fanged beast, consuming wealth and destroying our identity as a nation.

The two party system is a suckers game. There is no real difference between the two, just pretend differences design to split people into two easily managed herds. They both work together for one goal;

more power and control and security for them, limited choices, security and prosperity for us.

If our leaders were serious at all about national security, there would not be stories like this.

Mitch is right about what needs to be done tbh. But we can't get lazy fat apathetic Americans to turn out to vote, let alone take back our country.

Our country cannot be taken back by votes. The bankers and corporations control everything. 'Nuff said.

These aren't unrelated. People generally care more when it hurts.. and they vote. that's why I was dumbfounded when you told me that LA only had a 19 percent turnout.

That's more than what they expected.. I guess it was already a lock. I wonder if that was because of the mail in votes.

I don't recall a single news story prior to vote day.
No tele adverts either.

Article Says:
But bipartisan support for the bill evaporated after projected deficits quadrupled and Obama's economic recovery bill left many of the same spending accounts swimming in cash.
This one quote answers the question I think.
"The President does not have power under the Constitution to unilaterally authorize a military attack in a situation that does not involve stopping an actual or imminent threat to the nation" - Barack Obama (a freshman senator from Illinios)

So...runaway spending got us into this mess. And runaway spending will get us out of it?

That seems...counter-intuitive.

Runaway spending is a successful method to get out of a recession.

Problem is you need to both spend only where needed and be relatively in surplus or low in national debt to do it. Neither of which is in your favour.

That we're in a recession at all is counter-intuitive, with many countries powering ahead and seemingly solid economic bases, I think everyone would have predicted the good times to have lasted a while longer yet (back in, like, '06)

Hence my statement.

Targeted spending and targeted cuts get you out of recession. Or...just waiting for the market to correct itself. One is faster, but both work.

apparently canada has the best financial system in the world right now... "In October of 2008, the World Economic Forum declared that Canada's financial system was the "soundest in the world".

I think the market is going to go on a bear roll for a bit, and the idiots will think Obama had something to do with it.  His approval rating will not drop below 45% until the market falls again, unless he finds a way to blame Bush.
