Let's count the ways.
1)President to sign measure, which GOP says is irresponsible.
"the bill was written mostly over the course of last year, with support from key Republicans"
2) ...Obama to sign, announce steps at curbing penchant for pet projects.
"chock-full of lawmakers' per projects"
3) "If it had not been for the stimulus and the budget proposal it might have been ... noncontroversial," said House GOP leader John Boehner of Ohio. "The stimulus bill riled an awful lot of people up. ... And then the budget proposal comes out."
Welcome to the minority.
4) The bill was written over the course of last year, with support of key Republicans such as Minority Leader Mitch McConnel and Lamar Alexander #3 republican. They sponsored/co-sponsored $76M of per projects not requested by W. Alexander obtained 36 earmarks for $32M during the same time.
"Alexander supported the measure in the end; McConnell did not".
what's wrong with it now again?
5) Democrats had long feuded with Bush over domestic appropriations levels and stopped action on the nine bills last year, gambling that Obama would win the election and restore hundreds of cuts proposed by Bush.
"Appropriated spending for 2008 was $1.2 trillion; Obama's budget for next year calls for $1.3 trillion in appropriations."
6) Congress also awarded itself a 10 percent increase in its own budget...
I guess to keep ahead of the unemployment rate.
7) And, to the embarrassment of Obama — who promised during last year's campaign to force Congress to curb its pork-barrel ways — the bill contains 7,991 earmarks totaling $5.5 billion, according to calculations by the Republican staff of the House Appropriations Committee
"the bill was written mostly over the course of last year, with support from key Republicans..."
also, lets not forget forcing Congress to curb the fat during the campaign...
Okay, so if I get this right, the GOP supported this during Bush, the Dems opposed it. The Dems claim victory now, and the GOP is a jilted lover.
Makes sense to me.
Ps. There's some good stuff in there...not all bad.
I think I'd respect a veto
