Those that have worked and earned and pay their bills have been affected. Drug to the bottom by the entitlement crowd. ( same crowd that voted for Obama) Go figure.

The company I work for is debt free and doing fine.  Chances are that we will actually grow as we take over the clients of our troubled competitors.  Although I am looking at a wage freeze during 2009.

If you're being drug to the bottom then everything is not fine?

Yer right, didn't say everything is fine. The leeches and their messiah of entitlement, affects us all.

My business grossed just under a million dollars in '07.
We'll do about 300k this year if things remain stagnant. I have one semi part time employee, down from a high of nine. I know many who have lost their homes or are in the process. The ones that haven't are all upside down and trying for loan mods.

My peers who also own businesses are in various states of panic. The engine that fueled individual weath was home equity and the ability to borrow against it, and that engine has run out of gas.

Myself, the amount of gray in my hair has doubled, I have a hard time sleeping, my credit score is in the gutter and I have been drinking way too much. I think there will be a high price to be paid in terms of health because of all the stress this is causing to our soceity.

On the brightside, my internet sales are doing well. I have a two new ventures in the works that each could pay me 50k per year or more if they take off.

Around Northern Virginia (outside of Washington DC), the unemployment rate is still basically fully employed (3.5%) ... haven't noticed much of anything locally, but the city of Washington DC has been and always will be much worse.

There's lots of news, and a few low-skill jobs getting cut here and there ... and, of course, housing prices and investment values have fallen ... but really not much impact otherwise.

Everyone I know is fully employed or out of work less than 3-4 weeks.

Which tells me that if the press would just stop the horror headlines things would rebound much faster.

But here in California it is much worse.  The construction industry is in the dumps.  My friend is a soils engineer - out of work for the last 2 months.  Hasn't worked a full work week in about 5 months.  My other buddy is an estimator for a construction company - while he says his company bids a lot of projects (which is a good thing for him) they are down over 50%.  Other friends that are in the construction industry have varying status, but as a whole it's down down down.  Personally I've been relatively unaffected save a probable wage freeze and a hit to my 401k.  I am fortunate to have a stable job and I don't own a home so I'm ok.

Why? Who has is just as good - better even.

It's loss's that's really bad.

Back on track. My dad got made redundant - but that was a year ago and not really anything to do with this (he's happy about it - got nearly £100K payoff two years from retirement, which has allowed him to retire early).

As for me, I keep getting pay rises. Recession hasn't impacted me in the slightest.

I've gotten a massive raise and a tonne of expensive certification courses granted in the past few months. Can't say I know anyone affected by the crisis yet.
