A cold cheese sandwich, fruit and a milk carton might not seem like much of a meal -- but that's what's on the menu for students in New Mexico's largest school district without their lunch money.Faced with mounting unpaid lunch charges in the economic downturn, Albuquerque Public Schools last month instituted a ''cheese sandwich policy,'' serving the alternative meals to children whose parents are supposed to be able to pay for some or all of their regular meals but fail to pick up the tab.Such policies have become a necessity for schools seeking to keep budgets in the black while ensuring children don't go hungry. School districts including those in Chula Vista, Calif.; Hillsborough County, Fla.; and Lynnwood, Wash.; have also taken to serving cheese sandwiches to children with delinquent lunch accounts.Critics argue the cold meals are a form of punishment for children whose parents can't afford to pay. Parents who qualify for free meals are not affected.

''We've heard stories from moms coming in saying their child was pulled out of the lunch line and given a cheese sandwich,'' said Nancy Pope, director of the New Mexico Collaborative to End Hunger. ''One woman said her daughter never wants to go back to school.''Some Albuquerque parents have tearfully pleaded with school board members to stop singling out their children because they're poor, while others have flooded talk radio shows thanking the district for imposing a policy that commands parental responsibility.Second-grader Danessa Vigil said she will never eat sliced cheese again. She had to eat cheese sandwiches because her mother couldn't afford to give her lunch money while her application for free lunch was being processed.''Every time I eat it, it makes me feel like I want to throw up,'' the 7-year-old said. Her mother, Darlene Vigil, said there are days she can't spare lunch money for her two daughters.''Some parents don't have even $1 sometimes,'' the 27-year-old single mother said. ''If they do, it's for something else, like milk at home. There are some families that just don't have it and that's the reason they're not paying.''

Albuquerque Public Schools students receive a cheese sandwich in lieu of a hot meal if they have exceeded a set amount of meals charged to their account, ranging from two at high schools to 10 at elementary schools. The schools' Web site warns: ''Once the charging limit is met, students will be offered an alternate meal consisting of a cheese sandwich and a beverage.''With the new policy, the school district has collected just over $50,000 from parents since the beginning of the year. It also identified 2,000 students eligible to receive free or reduced-price lunches, and more children in the lunch program means more federal dollars for the district.School officials said the policy was under consideration for some time and parents were notified last fall. Families with unpaid charges are reminded with an automated phone call each night and notes are sent home with children once a week.Swift added that the cheese sandwiches -- about 80 of the 46,000 meals the district serves daily -- can be considered a ''courtesy meal,'' rather than an alternate meal. Some districts, she noted, don't allow children without money to eat anything.

Welcome to reality market. Schools have more important things to spend money on, like football stadiums, Macs, art deco and an influx of extraneous administrators. And don't blame the cities and states if they have more important things to buy, like garden islands and the most expensive traffic solutions installed where they're going to be ripped up within two years.

On the one hand, you would think they could devote a decent amount of money to lunches.

On the other hand, does it really cost too much for parents to provide their kids a decent meal to bring with them?

I mean, I know we have poverty in America, but damn...  Food is relatively cheap in this country.

Unless I'm missing something, there isn't a lot of validity in their argument, they're getting this food for free.  Here with no money at lunch you get... nothing.

Maybe we should follow your example.  It would make more sense.

The problem is...  we have a lot of entitlement fucktards here.  Granted, I've heard that there are a decent number of them in Canada too.

One interesting thing we do over here in NC is that our sales tax on food is only 2% (as opposed to the 7% on everything else).  How do you guys do it over in Chicago?

Yeah where I live the state doesn't tax the food down to 2%, but speaking from experience been going to grocery store whenever I need something and noticing that a lot of stuff is cheap, food wise or on sale.

So let the kids starve if they don't want to eat an extremely simplistic meal. Times are bad right now and they can't afford to have people get free lunches when their parents can't afford it like they used to.

If they can't deal with it, then they can just not eat. It's quite an easy solution.

OR they could be imaginative little fuckers and ask the lunch ladies to go put the cheese sandwich on the grill ffs.

Umm... I don't even remember having a free lunch option. Then again my parents weren't fucking deadbeats and always put money in my lunch account so maybe it was there.

In my area they just let the fast food places come in, no free lunches from them.  If you can't afford it go get food from the richies who don't like something in their lunch.

Boo mother fucking hoo. When I was a kid we got jack shit for a meal if we forgot our lunch money. Why not bring their lunch like most of us did?

Loaf of bread - $1.39
Pound of Lunch meat -$ 4.99
1/2 Pound of Cheese- $2.39
Piece of Fruit - $ Next to nothing
Chips or Cookies - Generic Brand for under $2.00

There you go folks. For around $10.00 you can have lunch for an entire week, or you could take the $10.00 to the store and buy some non bunching panties to help get over it.

On a side note: Who gives a shit about lunch anyways in school? You get locked in a brick building for 8 hours with 16 year old ass and instead of trying to work an angle on it these kids are worried about chese fucking sandwiches? In my day we would skip lunch and try and get a hand job underneath the bleachers or something in the gym kicking back nippers from our old man's liquor stash. Fucking little emo fags, my rant here is over. Flame away.

Easy solution...raise the price of lunches for everyone else to compensate...

Then when they get pissed show them the list of parents not paying that should be.

Then the shame will not be on the kids, but on the parents.

Yeah and lets see how long it takes for kids to turn on each other because they don't like paying more.

In a way... that is what is happening now with BO... raise the price(taxes) for wealthy so that the poor people can be compensated...
