It's all about money in the gaming industry...Also it's probably based on the BF2 engine, therefore cutting back development time.

Yeah i agree with some of ur points but not with the one where u say we need to enjoy BF2 several more, little too long for me, year or longer is fine but several its little too long.

This game doesn't need to have Battlefield attached to it. It could easily be its own game without help from BF name-brand.

I am going to reply to the original article once the registration clears my email. Until then I will post what I am going to post there... here.

I have to wonder what DICE is thinking in this move. I understand that EA Games has control over the distribution, selling and advertisement of the Battlefield series, however DICE, as the developer of the game, must have some kind of input in this. It is poor thinking on their part to agree to such an aggressive release date and to also think that the gamers of the world will support such a release. Just 9 months ago Battlefield 2 was released. I like many other gamers bought it and was amazed by the exciting play style and feel of the game. Compared to the older games of the Battlefield series the graphics were mind blowing and the modern feel a welcome enjoyment. But like many of us I was annoyed at the bugs and errors in the game. I couldn't help but wonder why DICE and EA would ever release a game with this many bugs in it. It's like the Alpha and Beta teams didn't even test the game or much worse that they did and DICE hurried by EA's urging and release dates was forced to release the game unfinished. EA Games is a perfect example of a large company that cares more for money than the quality of their games. Who this hurts is not only the consumer but also the reputation of the developers of the games. All these bugs and then patches and then more new bugs to force new patches has hurt the quality of the DICE name.

I have asked a few people who have some kind of connection with DICE as a company or it's employees and asked each one why the bugs exist and why the coding is so sloppy. Why are the graphics subpar in some areas but wonderful in other areas? Why does the game lag on simple graphical rendering? Why does this game suck more memory than other games of it's quality? Why do the static mesh on most objects not work with the terrain world around them? I didn't even bother asking about the balance stats on weapons and vehicles. Most of these questions were answered with two simple answers repeatedly, "DICE was hurried in their release of the game and could not clean up things as well as they would want." or "DICE has a few programers that are rather sloppy in practice and they did not have enough time to actually clean up their coding.". These reasons point to poor management on the part of DICE. They develope the game and they control when the game is ready for release. Regardless if EA controls the money flow or funding of a game if it is just not ready it shouldn't be released. Many games in the past have been delayed due to issues with the release game content. Why couldn't Battlefield 2 been delayed even a short few months to insure that it would be as bug free as they could get it? Instead of releasing it in June why not release it in November right before Christmas? Wouldn't that have still generated a huge return on Christmas shopping and also give them the much needed time of 5 months to clean up code and clear out bugs?  These are management decisions and DICE needs to start looking at their own future within the industry before being pressured into releasing incomplete games due to EA's massive wallet.

As a side note they also need to start looking at other innovations within the online gaming industry and esspecially in FPS games. Taking benefits from other company playbooks. Epic's superior menu and server search functions and buddy system. Their much faster rendering and graphic capability. Anyone what has ever played UT2004 can attest to the very fast and smooth game play. Not to mention the wonderful mods that came out for the game and how easily they were uploaded and used by the player. Anyone could make a map and create new vehicles and all it took to play that map with those new vehicles was to connect to the server and it uploaded the new content automatically. Why must BF2 require a separate download and then a manual activation in the Community section area of the menu? Why isn't there a Buddy Search function built into the menu system so that people can hook up online and play the same map?  Taking a benefit from Valve the updated and improved Steam system work and easily patches their games when they need to. Or Blizzard with their bittorrent like downloader that autoloads upon logging into World of Warcraft. Both of these systems are much easier to use and automatically download new content and patch their games.  Another improvement would be a seemless loading of official mods. BF2: Special Forces was released on CD just a few months ago and it requires a restart of the game in order to use just like most independent mods. Yet Euro Forces doesn't require anysort of restart. If you do not have Euro Force it tells you that you don't and doesn't let you play the map. Special Forces should work exactly the same way. And what was up with that round about and confusing way to download Euro Forces? Why must it be so complicated when the consumer is paying them money to buy an expansion that is nothing more than a glorfied patch of content?

In conclusion I agree with the article and what it presents however I also believe that DICE must look internally and look towards their future in this. Battfield 2142 should be delayed. It should be held back until it is absolutely bug free. It should be upgraded with a new graphical and physics engine. They should look towards the future of Dual Core processors and notice that Video cards are looking towards independent physics engines running on their own separate chips. These are all innovations that DICE could be looking at and really take the forefront in technology and what better game to showcase their skill and innovation but with Battlefield 2142?  That's my opinion.

Cheers,

I agree with most of what killroy had to say except for two things.

1. nomatter how many months or years of bug testing goes on there will always be bugs or things that didn't get touched up.

2. it's nice to see games using the newest technology, but it'salso harmful. even though companys should strive for the best product they do have to considering money and users. such as i could not play the new game if i needed a bigger gfx card or duel core processor and more gamers fall into my catagory than do those who have top of the line gaming boxes. so they would make a buetiful product, but would cut out the majority of gamers and thus their money. now I'm not saying they should stick with the old, but they need to find the balance of new and old so someone with a decent comp can play the game. though i would think that the name game should be held for atleast 1.5 years before released.

What you guys say is so true! I personally think that there's a lot of great online sci-fi shooters on the market already, such as UT2K4 or Quake4, and even more to come: UT2K7, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars. And BF2142 is not going to take some people from those shooters, to bring more new people as those games look much better already and it's not likely to stand a competition with them. BF 2142 will be released just to suck more money out of US, the BF2 players.

Oh come now, we all know your going to buy it, early release date or not. And you might want to note that it will hbave been a year by the time 2142 is released since bf2 was released, and the chances of the release date being on time are very, very slim. So stop moaning and bitching about EA/DICE's marketing strategy, and go frag some n00bs.

It was a little long.. and you lost me when you went into how the "plot" sucks (I skimmed through the rest). an Iceage is no less believable then USA having a war with China. Who cares what the plot is, you need a means to an end and they chose an Iceage.. big deal it's called telling a story.

It sounded more like more whining then a "few words".

I like the concept and will more then likely buy it if I can afford it at the time. I knew it would come, im just glad its sooner then later. (and yes if its not released on time, I wont throw a hissy fit)

p.s. hire an editor

No offense champ, but this is a forum. A place to bitch and voice your opinions on whatever. This isn't another thread about EA making the AA to powerful or other shit that we've heard a million times. But I can now sleep tonight knowing that you contributed so much of your insight and intellect with such an itellegent post.

Anywho, I feel EA should finish what they started before they move on and create another rushed game filled with bugs. I might eventually get it, but I still need to get my money's worth by playing some great mods. Remember folks, BF1942 would not have been as popular if it wasn't for DC, who coincidentally helped make BF2. BF1942 is a great game, don't get me wrong, but I know a bunch of people who purchased it mainly because of DC. I think EA should support it's modding community, not utterly destroy it. C'mon, how many mod developers are going to develop for BF2142 knowing that within a year there could be another rushed game coming out in about a year to take its place?

well said

agree with everything except for the bugs.  i've yet to find a game without bugs and there is no bug in bf2 since i've been playing that has drastically affected my gaming experience.  actually, i've only crashed once since i've played it and the red/blue bug is rare enough.  i've never gotten stuck, i've never had graphics issues.

but all in all, well put.

Enjoyment can last too long ? If a game is supported well or just good enough in the first place to last like HL and its mods namely CS it should keep the enjoyment of the product going for years. Are you so sucked in by marketing that enjoyment of one game can last too long?
Now if your not enjoying BF2 anymore and there is no more support for it then I'd say its natural to look to the next release.

I expect BF2142 to end up like BF:V, a slightly tuned BF2 engine with horrible gameplay that will have 1 or 2 good mods for it.
