You already have internet censorship, and lost most all rights to firearms ownership.

UK and Germany have more permissive firearms ownership, and more open internet.

Internet censorship: I haven't notice 1 iota of difference. Once it starts pissing a lot of people off, it wont last.

Guns: we don't need guns. Unless you are a farmer or sports shooter, then there is no need to have a gun.  my sister got a .22 pretty easily about  a year ago

It's complicated, and if we're honest you can't really include the UK in European generalisations. We're the maverick of the EU, which is what comes when weaker countries want to enforce their own currency on you as well as take your carriers and military aid for free
Good points.

I think every Government does have a certain amount of propaganda they use on their own people for their own interests. America is hardly the individualistic, open minded country when you can either vote for a Black guy that can gather millions of votes by spouting "what we need is change" (well no shit) or an old man that will die within 2009. Otherwise your vote serves as much purpose as frightening the Sheeple of the west into stopping spending and convincing them a recession is coming. Adding to the problem.
Well, the origin of the problem is that the rest of the world has gotten too comfortable with us buying all their shit without them buying our own shit.

The extreme imbalance of our trade only makes us vulnerable, just like it makes all the rest of the world vulnerable as well.

The global economy would be much more stable if we consumed less and produced more.  It would also help if the U.K. and everyone else wasn't so protectionist.  We've opened our own markets about as much as we can, while so much of the rest of the world really hasn't.

Then, when Obama mentions a few random "buy American" clauses, everybody throws a fucking tantrum.

Granted, the U.K. is a lot more open than many other countries.

I'm not a fan of the fairness doctrine, but again, this is a pretty minor thing compared to the OP.

Wot?

When did this happen? I can go browse porn right now via the internet or buy some at the local sex shop. A wanker named Stephen Conroy is after the internet filter, and it probably wont happen now as he's being slammed on all sides over it whenever it gets publicity. He's part of 'new labor' or the Labor Right. I'm hoping the labor govt. withdraws support for this stupid idea and removes Conroy from his position as I'll start to feel my comparisons to a communist country actually have some grounding to them, which would make me want to move to Canada. Or Belgium or Germany or somewhere. Would also spoil one of my favorite political jokes at the moment which winds up some mates of mine who are left leaning/unionist/socialist fellas. The reason Conroy backs this idea which originated with Family First I think, I am certain, is because he is infact an Englishman immigrant from the old country.

I also have a bruno .22, a Mauser .308 (I think it's a mauser, the bolt on it is fucked anyway) and a .22 magnum in a gun safe less than 5m away. Better tell Dad to go hand his shooters license back and dump the gun safe and hand in the guns for destruction.

Shit he'd probably better call his security guard employee who legally owns a semi-auto pistol for recreational shooting. Oh and my old boss who has a large revolver on his boat at all times to ditch his corporate shooting license and dump the gun over the side quick smart. Best call the next door neighbor too, who legally owns a large caliber rifle for hunting pigs and buffalo. His mate has an Aussie .303 from WW2, still in good working order.

Look up your shit before you go spouting off.

I don't mean to derail this thread, but seriously, where in Australia does this Family First party actually have the most influence?

So far as I can tell, the rest of Australia is radically different from them.

The only seat they hold in the federal parliament at the moment is a seat in Victoria.

They have a seat or two in the current Western Australian parliament and the South Australian parliament though; they also have had several defectors join their ranks. They are basically constantly in competition with the Greens, another Aussie party.

For clarification, the filter is policy right now, not reality. The govt is still trying to figure out how to do it without completely destroying our internet speeds. I'd prefer the UK's system of internet filtering really. Far more practical approach than legislation and government expenditure.

Weird, so I take it Victoria is more religious than the rest of Australia?

I live in Vic and I dont think its any more religious than anywhere else. I would think rural Queensland would be quite religious.

We do have religeon but its nothing like the bible belt in America (not having a go at it, just drawing a comparison)

Oh, I found out some more info on the internet censorship:

Communications minister, Stephen Conroy, has announced six ISPs will participate in the first phase of the Federal Government’s controversial plan to introduce mandatory filtering of Australia’s Internet feed.

The ISPs involved in the first phase of the live pilot are: Primus Telecommunications, Tech 2U, Webshield, OMNIconnect, Netforce and Highway 1, who have thrown their support behind the capabilities of filtering technology. The pilot will involve six weeks of testing once filtering equipment has been installed.

http://www.computerworld.com.au/article … isps_board

I havent heard of any of those ISP's except Primus. I think any serious "web-goer" would leave them if they found out they were the first to sign up.

My ISP wrote to me and was against the filtering. They even sent a petition around and i signed it.

Yeah, apparently Tech 2U was reasonably big in the very early 90s.

Webshield already have a filter up. I hadn't heard of any of them up here at all until I saw the article somewhere that mentioned them.

Oh and Family First got into the senate on preferences I believe.

Not true on firearms ownership at all.
