I'm looking for my first car and thinking about spending around 2k.

Things I want:

- 3 doors hatchback (or something like a mx-3)
- Speed, doesn't need to be super fast though.
- Low cost per month for fuel.
- Reliability.

If you can think of something, many thanks.

If your worried about fuel prices convert to LPG.

*not sure if that's applicable already when you say GAS prices. lol

Get a old style Golf?  Providing it isn't sporty under the bonnett it should't criple you on insurance, if not then, Corsa, Clio, anything small like that.

spendin 2k (euro?)

You should be able to find some used versions of

Fiesta
Corsa
Golf
Astra
Civic (if you're lucky)
Corolla.

Out of all of them, Fiestas probably the best choice, they do a nice 1.6, reliable, fun (very very fun) to drive, and cheap to repair. Give us some options

206GTI, probably the most fun you can have for 2k, Golf GTI is more fun but for that money you're going to be buying a shitty one, and the insurance is more costly than the 206 too, or a 206CC for posing purposes, more like 3-4k for that though

In reply to Varegg:
You could also get an S13 200sx (1989 to 1993). Then you have a choice of 89-90 being a CA18DET or after that, the SR20DET redtop. Then if you get an S14, only the 97-98 will have the black top.

I have no idea what these cars go for over here in Europe, though. However, if you want cost efficiency, get yourself an S13. Same SR engine that came in the early S14s and they look better. Now if you can find a 97-98 S14 for €2k - BUY IT! Those cars are super rare and dead sexy.

That being said, anything Japanese should serve you well. Then if you ever think about getting into the aftermarket, your choices are pretty broad in many cases seeing as how the Japanese motors are really popular for tuning and they are reliable AND you can use the parts across many different platforms.

Buying a VW Golf is a stupid idea, though.

Then aim for a 1.6 litre engine. It will get you started from the intersection and it's a moderately low cost for fuel. Don't go for a 2.0 car. I have one and the fucker drinks around 9l/100km even if I drive nicely Ofcourse a 1.3 litre is more of a low cost. I'd actually suggest a 1.3 if you drive mainly in the city and not much on highways. A Toyota could be quite ok. Spareparts are cheap too.

I have no idea about Euro prices, but I'd get try and get a mid 90s BMW 320 or 323.
