Kyrgyzstan's government has submitted a decree to parliament for the closure of a key US air base in the Central Asian state, Kyrgyz officials say.
The air base supports US and Nato operations in Afghanistan and is the only US base in Central Asia.
For Russia, on the other hand, it is a significant diplomatic victory as it seeks to reassert its influence in all former Soviet republics and beyond, our correspondent says.
President Bakiyev made his announcement on Tuesday in Moscow, where he was promised more than $2bn (£1.4bn) in Russian aid.
He said the Manas base - set up in 2001 to assist the US military operation against al-Qaeda and the Taleban in Afghanistan - was only meant to be open for two years at the most.
But perhaps more importantly, he made it clear the Americans had not been willing to pay what Bishkek regards as the right price to keep the base open, our correspondent says.

This could probably be a big blow to operations in Afghanistan. And what I find most interesting is how Russia is using its economic power to reassert itself in former USSR regions. And the fact that all this has popular support from the local populations doesn't speak well for the US.

Thoughts?

With the Taliban on the rise in Pakistan and constantly fucking up supply routes from there, even blowing up bridges and now with the probable closure of this base in Kyrgyzstan. Is the Allied operations in Afghanistan fucked? (like it was ever anything else, should've just gone straight for AQ and nabbed them all before they fucked off elsewhere, rather than get stuck into a fight with local Taliban/Pashtun nationalists which are probably impossible to actually defeat)

Especially with O talking about how Afghanistan operations are going to be ramped up a few notches, I guess this is a giant spanner in the works

No it's not a thinly veiled hatred post (but honestly I couldn't care less if you thought it was, play the god damn victim game all you want for all I care), and if you read my other post in this topic I talked about how Afghanistan is more the USSR's fault in the first place than other countries. I was however, criticizing the way the operation was handled and how the current objectives are pretty much impossible to obtain (with history proving that) and that the original objective was never even achieved fully, not to mention the fact that everything was made 10X worse because the two main players in Afghanistan (USA and UK) went off for some fuckery in Iraq which was completely pointless and only served to give AQ another base of operation, (for awhile) and doing lots of other pointless shit which jeopardised the whole WoT.

Frankly I don't understand why we're fighting a civil war for Afghanistan/fighting the Taliban etc.. I thought we went in there to nab the terrorists, not the rag tag group that was just giving them a place to live. Almost had the terrorists too but for some reason we managed to let them slip away into other areas (and like I said, even managed to let them open up shop in Iraq for awhile)

I think most people have just because disillusioned with the whole war in general, nobody really knows why what's happening is even happening, I think most people are just happy to accept that there is a war there, it's been like that for ages now, and that, that's just how shit is

Once AQ more or less managed to escape Afghanistan and go elsewhere the game was pretty much up, the window of opportunity was shut (imo) and yes, we did damage them quite alot and nab a few of their top men too, but obviously it wasn't enough and now we're stuck in something that's almost completely different to the main point

edit: TUF I actually read your post again and it looks like I gave it too much credit:

You are actually fucking insane, lol

edit 2: Don't get me wrong, I think what we're doing in Afghanistan is quite honourable, they deserve better than the Taliban and I think it's good for the world if they vanished from it, I just find it frustrating how the main objective could never really be achieved

Nah, i do agree with the Afghan invasion. Couldn't a carrier group + Turkey or some other country take the strain of a loss of base?

This is an old issue that has been on-going for quite some time. It's flared up every couple of years since 2001. It'll get sorted out, just like the other times.

Kyrgyzstan says its decision to close a US base that serves as a vital supply route for US and Nato operations in Afghanistan is "final".

---

The reason why it's probably more important this time around is because of Russia, they're clearly using their money to influence Kyrgyz whereas they weren't an issue before, personally I don't see why they're doing this because a stable Afghanistan is in everyone's interests, surely. Then again, there's no such thing as everyones interests. Especially when it comes to Russia and the USA, they just do things because they want to do things
