That's the problem though, it was about weapons of mass destruction and stopping more terror attacks. The "helping" of Iraqi citizens didn't really grab much attention from the press and was never pushed as high on the agenda from Bush until late in the occupation.

Otherwise I think more of us would have cared about the well being of Iraqis than we now do.

The attention on Iraq is going to drop once forces pull out anyway. Caring now isn't going to be of much use.

I'd like to think that all the coalition troops that have been killed haven't died in vain and helped a country in need. No one else has had the balls to see through helping out a Middle Eastern country in the last 500 years. Who knows, maybe in another 20-50 years and Iraq is a strong democratic country, history will look back at it and think it was a success, I'd like to hope so anyway.

You still live in a pretty great place in this world ATG and have an awesome lifestyle compared to the people of Iraq (and a hell of a lot more places) so saying Bush traded your prosperity to save Iraq is pretty naive.

The same stupid argument could be made for the 9/11 attacks. More African kids died on 9/11 than Americans in the twin towers.

I disagree with both. The differences come from how responsable we are for causing the situation and how easily we could stop it. A large amount of the problems in Iraq were the direct results of our actions. The bombing in Gaza can be ended at any time with a phone call from Washington. The 9/11 attacks were a horrific and willful action and those responsible could easily have avoided the mass deaths by simply not doing it.

The problems of famine, disease and wars in Africa are both much more difficult to stop and have a much less direct link to our countries actions.

The Israel/Palestine situation can be heavily influenced by the US, the US has little control over the wars in Africa.

If the US president decides to ring up the Israeli leadership and demand that they stop the attacks or they'll pull funding and political support for Israel then Israel will stop that instant. Short of invading, there's little the US can obviously do to stop most African conflicts.

Add the fact that US/UK etc. actions have has a significant part in leading the Israel/Palestine to the situation that it's in now, people have to shoulder some responsability. The Iraqi situation we bear a hige weight of responsability for.

We care more about things that are our fault (at least partially) and that we can do something significant and easy to help to resolve it, especially conflicts like Iraq where there is a clear self interest.

Iraq should've been finished off in 1991-1992. We were there, we had the ammo, we had an international coalition, we had the will of the [all too mercurial] public, and we had the Republican Guard all but decimated.

And, if quite a few people are to be believed, Saddam was one radio transmit from dead. Just one commander saying "go" would've solved that issue.

Iraq would be a much more stable area if it were broken back into it's 3 constituent Ottoman states; roughly "Shia-land", "Sunni-ville", and Kurdistan.

Whoever decided to get the Kurds into a rebellion against Saddam, THEN cut all support to them -- that person has their own circle of hell warmed and waiting for them.

Throw alot of money around, make alot of promises - then forget all promises and drop all funding on the whims of the new administration. THAT has been the American legacy in the Middle East for the last 60 years. THAT is why noone in the middle east with any memory gets completely in bed with the American forces anymore, unless they have a solid Plan-B for when the Americans suddenly pull out.

Do I care about Iraq? uuum No.

Why? Well I can't seem them bringing any GOOD things to the table. Don't like their religion, they fight a lot, they try to get their rules into our country, barbaric rules then, can't seems to be calm when insulted(Danish pictures), generally have a bad reputation and other things.

So no I don't care the slightest about that country. If it was to be wiped away I probably wouldn't care much other than "Good riddance. Now make something useful of that place".

I also doubt people who live there have a happy life so all that would happen is they end the torture quicker.
