After reading this article about the trend toward segregation in American schools, I was left wondering, as a white family, what is expected of us?
Are we expected to purposely stick our kids in a school that is below poverty and below standards for teachers, even though I can clearly afford not to do this, just to keep the schools integrated? Does the fact that I do not want my kids going to a fucked up school full of trouble makers and dissent make me a racist? Does the fact that I want what is best for my kids and strive to make sure they have a good school in a good district with no gang violence and no drugs ( comparatively speaking) make me a racist and a villain?
Now, multiply my attitude by a million and you will see why there is an increase in segregation. Are we bad people for not wanting to expose our kids to the bullshit that is inherent with schools such as been described in this article? These are the same reasons for "white flight" all over the country, in mass transit and in real estate. Does it make us racist because we want what is best for OUR families and can afford NOT to have to deal with inner city bullshit.
