NEWPORT NEWS - It looks like the Highlander is in and the Prius is out — for now at least.

Trucks and sport utility vehicles will outsell cars for the first time since February, according to a December report by Edmunds.com, which tracks industry statistics.

"Despite all the public discussion of fuel efficiency, SUVs and trucks are the industry's biggest sellers right now as a remarkable number of buyers seem to be compelled by three factors: great deals, low gas prices and winter weather," said Michelle Krebs of AutoObserver.com, a division of Edmunds.com, in a prepared statement.

"It was this summer that customers were concerned about the gas mileage. It hasn't been a topic of conversation lately," said Dave Lawson, the general sales manager at Pomoco Chrysler Jeep Dodge in Newport News. The majority of Pomoco's inventory is SUVs, and its best-selling models are minivans.

Lawson said sales at the dealership are up, although they are still below last year's numbers. Low gas prices and increased consumer confidence are part of the reason, he said. But the real draw for customers is prices

honestly, priuses just don't have the 4WD capability and ground clearance to survive winters here.  i wouldn't buy a SUV though.  well, maybe a Rav-4 or something small.  the best thing would be to buy a Subaru.

Here ya go!!

Doesn't it take like 5yrs for a Prius to save on emissions to equal what it takes to make it?

Hell, gas prices here are $1.67 I'm buying a F-350because their prices are dirt cheap lol.

You just need a better snow removal system.  We get plenty of snow, and I get around just fine in my Eclipse.  Then again, Utah has one of the best snow removal units in the nation.

Buy a Hyundai. Lose your job or income and they will take the car back.

Hyundai Motor America unveiled a novel approach to the problem over the weekend. Dubbed the Hyundai Assurance Program, the South Korean automaker said people who finance or lease a new Hyundai during the next 12 months could return the car if they "experience an involuntary loss of income" within one year of the purchase date.

Not that this has anything to do with gas prices or emissions .

well, for me it'd be a problem just getting up the damn driveway.  even when it's plowed (anytime we get anything over .5 in), the motherfucker freezes into a solid sheet of ice.  add that to the 1.5-car-width roads and 45 degree inclines we have here and you have a recipe for disaster.

You'd think people would figure it's not going to last (which it's not, gas/oil is already on the rise again)...guess not.

Oh bite me!

It was a balmy 4 degrees this morning when I woke up, but then the storm rolled in, so while it's snowing it's an even balmier ~30.

In DC, whenever it snows more than 2 or 3 inches everything goes frantic and most places close. So having 4WD isn't so important when you might not have to go to school/work.

Honestly if I lived and worked exclusively in rural and suburban areas, I'd totally buy a nice pickup. But they're a bitch to park in urban DC, so no. I'm loving the current gas prices though - filled up my mom's car for $30... premium gas too.

I'm not surprised at all.  In past threads about gas prices I noted that Americans have short memories, and would likely return to their old ways, in short order.

When it comes to fuel efficiency, we're a lot more shortsighted than most of the industrialized world.
