Here is the logic - If you do not have health insurance but need emergency treatment (such as from being shot in the chest), you will be provided care. However, 2 months or so down the road you will be billed for this care. This applies to everyone, regardless of legal status. From what it sounds like, ATG's friend decided to go under an alias so it would be harder for the hospital to send the bill to him. Illegals don't get "free healthcare", it's just a lot harder to send a bill to someone who isn't "on the grid". It's irresponsible and unethical (to go under an alias or not pay your bill) no matter what your legal status is. People tend to throw out the "illegals get free healthcare" line because the reality is that many cannot be tracked down and/or do not pay their bill, just like a good chunk of legal citizens. Taxpayers might pay for some of it, depending how the hospital accounts for the work done. The only way I could see taxpayers paying for it would be if the medical work done was billed against a taxpayer funded program like Medicare. Back when I had employees I offered to copay on health insurance and they all looked at me like I was bendecko and said " a doctor is free no? ".

Welcome the the US health care system. You are not allowed to be turned away from a hospital (well, the ER, at least) for life-saving medical care (talking trauma here). But if you are an illegal alien, it is assumed that you will be unable to pay the bill. You still get the care, but no bill. Ditto if you are homeless.Jenspm wrote:
