pick up some second hand PC and use that as a HTPC. A P3 will do for SD content and music, a lowly dual core will work for 1080p x264 content.

Yea back when applications didn't need large about of screen space. I would lose my application partly off screen. I've tried it already max. My PC has a SDTV out and it works ok but I lose my apps sometimes.

720x480 or 720x576 isn't so hard to work with.
