The Arctic Cooling Freezer64Pro is always a good buy. Even the Alpine64 will get the job done. Otherwise Scythe also make great coolers. Zalman is good but IMO overpriced.

Make sure to get a Heatsink that fits socket 939 and that you have some thermal paste. Arctic Cooling heatsinks come with good thermal paste pre-applied. Having some extra thermal paste is always useful in case you need to do a remount.

I don't know what case you have, so I can't really recommend anything. Got any holes that don't have a fan mounted yet? Measure it and add an according one. You can also cut a 120mm hole into your case if you know how. Make sure to get rid of any dirt in your PC and that you have decent cable management for clean airflow
Ty max,

Regarding CPU coolers, these 2 are in my price range:

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/150982   Alpine 64 GT      £6.13
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/150270   Alpine 64 PWM   £7.84

However, i might be able to borrow a bit more money off my parents (lol) and get this:

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/131148  Freezer-64-LP Dual Cooling Low Profile Processor Cooler   £14.54, is that worthe the extra money?

Regarding case fans - I don't have any at the moment (it was a crap PC when i bought it 2 years ago )
I measured all the holes, here's a labelled picture, as i'm a bit confused as to which measurement refers to the size of the fan and if you should measure from the center or the edge of the hole

http://i39.tinypic.com/15fn0pl.jpg

Obviously if i can take a 120mm fan, i should get one yeah?

+1 for your help
120mm of course.

Each of my case fans cost at least twice as much as those CPU coolers
Shh, i'm poor and lazy with no job

And looking at my measurements i can get a 120mm fan yeah, amidoingitrite?

+1 for you too

Edit:
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/105137
and
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/97858
(or http://www.ebuyer.com/product/65697 for the lolz)
look ok? Which would you say is better?

Well, there are a few things that you should NEVER go cheap on in your PC. Mainly: PSU and cooling. If they fail, they might take something with them to the grave. Cooling on AMD is important, because IIRC some AMD chips tend to fry themselves rather than shutting down if they overheat.

Do you need more cooling? I don't think overclocking would give you that much of a benefit. Save up for a new rig

Well, i'm hitting up to 70 on load, so it's not perfect really

I gave up on OCing. Also i noticed if i take the side of the case off it goes down to about 55

oh and save up for a new rig? cya in 2012

The AC64GT should be great.

While 70°C load isn't good by any means, it's still far away from any damaging levels. It's true that AMDs don't throttle down like intel chips do, but you're still far away from a throttle temp (~100°C usually)

The hiper fan you linked pushes around 60cfm while being pretty quiet so I definitely advise getting that.

Those A64 chips are pretty cool, so there really isn't a need to go for more beefy cooling. Those 2 things should handle it perfectly well. Again make sure to get rid of any dirt, optimize cables and airflow and if possible cut out the grill of the fan hole (to allow the fan to push more air quieter)

Ah ok, thanks for that

After taking the side of the case off, it's lowered it by around ~17 degrees, which means i can carry on folding (24/7) until I have enough to buy those fans (which should only be 2 weeks or so, then i'll overclock for even moar folding)

We are releasing more exciting new projects for the NVidia GPU clients.  These simulations are similar to the simulations of Protein L and ACBP (projects 5749-5764) -- full production runs of a good-sized protein that should really test the limits of fast folding simulations.

Projects 5765-5772:
NTL9, a mixed alpha-helix/beta-sheet protein with 627 atoms, being served from vsp07v.
See for details: http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/fahproject?p=5765

The simulation entails the first 39 residues of the sequence of L9, which has been well studied and shown to fold autonomously on a millisecond time scale.  NTL9 has been simulated in the lab before, but only in a limited sense (perching a protein right on the edge of folding/unfolding, and simulated many short trajectories).  With the GPU simulations, we may have the chance to directly observe folding/unfolding events, which is an exciting prospect.

The small size of this protein should be very amenable to fast folding simulations out to microseconds time scales relatively quickly.  (You will notice that NTL9 has about half as many atoms as ACBP, so expect an improvement in performace compared to the Protein L and ACBP simulations.)

Like before, we're requiring minimum core version v1.19 on these projects.

Ok, im about to buy an 8800GT to use as a second card (instead of current 1x16x it will be 2x8x). How do i set it up for folding under vista 64 ? do i need these "dummy plug" things and if so how many, 1 or 2 ? I run one monitor only atm and will be doing when i get the other card. Thankyou

set up is easy. Disable SLI. Give each client its own folder. In the shortcut to the .exe add

Code:

 -gpu 0
for the first GPU and

Code:

 -gpu 1
for the second GPU

Under vista each card needs to be connected to a monitor. Most monitors have dual inputs so you can just connect both cards to the same monitor.

Once you run out of monitors () you'll either need a KMV switch (expensive and a waste) or dummy plugs. 1 plug per card. To make a plug you need 1 DVI to VGA adaptor and 3 75 ohm resistors. The resistance doesn't have to be exactly 75 ohm, I use 100 ohm ones and it works fine.

guide to make them
You don't need to solder or use that cover thing. Just bend the resistors and stick them in the holes of the adapter. Works perfectly fine

You can buy resistors at any electronics store. Should be easy to find. If you really can't find any at all, PM me and I'll send you a couple.

thankyou max.

Also, howcome i cant run my smp client at the same time as running a gpu client. As you know, my e5200 is dual core therefore i should be able to run it on the 2nd core........ ty

you gotta give every client its own machine ID. Apart from that nothing stops you from running the SMP on your CPU

What error are you getting if you're trying to run it?

Added the -smp flag to the shortcut?
