THE enraged parent who dragged his child from a Christmas Carol Service for fear that she might hear the 'blasphemous words' of a Catholic priest has been branded 'a sectarian Scrooge' by irate councillors.
Hundreds of children from across the Borough converged on Antrim Forum last Saturday for the seasonal showpiece, but before host George Jones could raise the curtain on the annual feast of festive family fun one Antrim man threatened to spark an unholy row.
He had queued patiently for over half an hour for the opportunity to see his daughter perform - but for the unapologetic Free Presbyterian it was to be a short stay.
Looking through the programme he noticed 'to his horror' that the Very Reverend Con Boyle, of St MacNissi's Roman Catholic Church in Randalstown, was scheduled to join two of his Protestant counterparts in leading the capacity crowd in prayers.
In a carbon copy of this year's Remembrance Day commemorations in Antrim, when Councillor Mel Lucas boycotted the service in All Saints' Church because of the attendance of Catholic clergy, the prospect of cross-community worship was too much for the devout born-again Christian.
“I felt physically sick. I was literally shaking with anger," said the local man, who asked not to be named.
“I dropped the programme and went straight over to the stage and pointed up at my daughter and told her to come away.
“I wanted no part of it and as her father it was my duty to protect her. The scriptures are very clear on the question of ecumenical worship, so my conscience was clear.
“I had no intention of embarrassing the school or the organisers, but if I had known that there was a chance that my child would be exposed to Romanist prayers I can assure you she would not have been there in the first place."
