I keep hearing increased circulation of news on the "(RED)" movement to help AIDS stricken people in Africa to get medicine.

AIDS is chicken pox compared to Malaria. Malaria kills way more people in Africa each year than AIDS does.

Should the industrialized world be putting so much effort into finding the "cure"? We have plateaued at the moment with just being able to manage the symptoms. Think what $2 billion dollars could do to Malaria eradication efforts, or creating an adaptive Flu vaccine?

I believe that AIDS has gone the way of Global Warming, when it comes down to it, although Bono is at the reigns, rather than Al Gore.

Thoughts?

Aids is preventable very easily and the best campaign is awareness, it's also a very relatively new disease. As is HIV.

Malaria on the other hand goes back for over 50,000 years, and may have been a human pathogen for the entire history of the species. We have a much higher chance of finding a cure for AIDs\HIV than we do for Malaria, although research and awareness into each is very important.

Sadly I think the reason AIDs has so much publicity is the chance a Westerner can catch it.

I don't think you can compare the two on merits of where the resources and money should go. Much like Breast cancer compared to Testicular cancer. I'm sure you've seen plenty of breast cancer charities, fund-raisers, etc but just as many men are diagnosed with testicular cancer as are women with breast cancer. Does that mean researching and funding should go into both equally?

You can't answer that, because you don't know how close we are to finding a cure\prevention. It's never just a case of how much money we throw at it.

Maybe the reasons why AIDS gets so much attention are because it's (so far) not curable, and it affects a lot more people in the First World than malaria does....

Finding a cure for AIDs would probably help with curing other virus's as well.
