Do you think, just because you are a sports star/public figure, you should be considered a role model?

Take Shane Warne for example. Some people may not know him. Shit role model but one of the best cricketers ever. People slammed him for being a poor role model. He never put up his hand and said "hey kids, do what i do". He was just an aussie bloke who liked to smoke and drink and screw women.

The press love bringing someone down and I guess that's why they label these people as they do.

So why should be, by default, make these people role models?

Humans imitate. It's instinctive - look at people interacting and you'll find them copying each other, if one person smiles, the other will do so unconsciously, if someone frowns, you'll see a similar response.

It's just a progression of the idea that children imitate people they see without an established sense of morals. Whether or not we give children enough credit for their intelligence is another matter.

Fine. those people might be putting their hand up...but the people who are labelled by default.

I think it stem for our obsession with celebrity. A lot of people think "oh, they are on tv or in a magazine they must be doing it right"

Kids should be looking a lot closer to home for role models.

The problem is not THEM the problem is the rest of us. We are sheep, NASCAR fans will use a certain laundry detergent because their favorite driver has it plastered all over their car.

It is our responsibility to choose our roll models. If we as a society choose celebrities to worship over fire fighters, policemen, teachers, doctors nurses etc....Then these celebrities will continue to make the money they make.

In short, it is not their problem or their responsibility, it is ours.

I think people in the public eye have some responsibility not to be total fuckups.

As a nobody my actions have no consequences, for anyone else or society at large.

If pistol shooting were a high profile sport, and I knew what I did today would be copied by kids tomorrow, then I might think twice about what I said and did. Its called social responsibility, which is sadly lacking these days.

Lowing is right - there I said it - its up to society really, if Weetbix manufacturers think people will buy their stuff if they sponsor 50c rather than, say, an air ambulance or a park, then thats what they will do.

Personally I don't watch sports so don't really get exposed to sponsorship advertising.

Agreed, this whole celebrity thing is out of control.
Also the press used to only publish public stuff about people, private used to be private - unless you did stuff with animals - although it was published in a codified way.
While today's Mirror might read 'Elton John is a screaming butt-monkey and snorts cocaine' 40 years ago it would have read 'Mr John is currently unmarried and hosts regular parties for the social classes'
Don't think people used to be better, they weren't.
