Guantánamo inmate's lawyer asks State to give him a home

A Guantánamo Bay detainee's lawyer is in discussions with the Department of Justice and the Department of Foreign Affairs about the possibility of allowing him to settle in Ireland. If the Government agrees, it will become the first EU state to accept a Guantánamo detainee who is not one of its citizens. Oybek Jamoldinivich Jabbarov, a 30-year-old Uzbek national who was living as a refugee in Afghanistan when he was captured in 2001, has been cleared for release but remains at the US detention centre because he cannot return to his native Uzbekistan for fear of torture or other ill-treatment. Mr Jabbarov's Boston-based lawyer Michael Mone has discussed his client's predicament with officials from the Department of Justice and the Department of Foreign Affairs. "I think he would be a perfect fit for Ireland," Mr Mone told The Irish Times. "He has told me over and over again that he wants to be settled in a country that is free, safe and democratic."

I don't think I'd care to be honest. Ireland has little or no Al Qaeda infrastructure to speak of... I think these kind of groups are still a bit wary of the spectre of the IRA to be honest. He would have no terrorist underbelly to slip into... and that's presuming he was even guilty of anything.

Braddock, you obviously didn't read into this story too fully. I'm not saying whether we should give him amnesty or not but he was released from Guantanamo for a reason: they had nothing on him. He was not captured by the US in the field but rather handed to the US by the Northern Alliance. For all anyone knows they could just have bore a grudge against him so they decided to fuck him over. He is originally from Uzbekistan. His case makes a mockery of the 'Gitmo is a fair and just place' nonsense tbh.

Yes, this story is an offshoot of that fact. These people have to go somewhere now and many of them had nothing resembling credible evidence against them in the first place and so can't justifiably go into regular prisons that require an actual trace of guilt to warrant incarceration.

There's plenty of terrorist training camps there for him to brush up on his skills...

If he hasn't done anything there's not much issue giving him asylum.

He's been cleared for release by your miserable 'legal system' at Gitmo.
He's not therefore even a suspected terrorist.

They picked up a $5000 reward for handing him over. They offered him a lift and dropped him of with the yanks and got paid. Wrong place, wrong time.
I say Ireland should take him. He is just one person. Although its the USA's mess so they should compensate Ireland for whatever it costs to resettle him.

And they need to compensate him for abducting him and locking him up for five years for no reason.

He was a refugee in Afghanistan. You'd think he could apply for refugee status almost anywhere.
