Last night, I got a call from my mom telling me to get to her house ASAP. Something about the dog (referred to as Jazz from here on out). I get there and see this open wound on her upper pectoral area. Mom says she had let her in earlier and she looked fine, so she left for about an hour to run some errands and when she got home she noticed this big laceration.

I rushed Jazz to the hospital and she gets into the animal-ER immediately. After about an hour the doctor tells me what the operation will be and I leave. I figure it'll all go smoothly.

This morning I wake up and check my phone and see a voice message from the animal hospital. I check and it said that they were having complications during surgery and to call them back when I could (they called at 5AM so unfortunately I couldn't answer it). I call and they tell me the doctor was on the phone with another client so she'd call back.

Around a minute after, my dad comes and breaks the news to me. Jazz died during the operation. They said that while they were flushing the wound, her heart rate dropped dramatically and stopped. They tried reviving her and it started beating a few times, but it never sustained. They said she died fighting, which is a minute comfort to me since at least I know she looked death in the face and fought him to the tooth. Apparently the wound was much deeper than they had thought, and it was very close to her jugular. They think that it might have somehow been compressed during surgery, cutting off that major blood flow. I don't hold any ill will toward the doctors; I knew the risks of surgery, and I know they tried everything they could to save her.

Did you ever find out how she got that cut in the first place?

My deepest sympathies, I understand your feelings.

The emotional bonds between people/pets can run extremely deep, so yes, it can be comparable to the loss of a family member or anyone we hold in deep regard.

Consider it another lesson in our short journey.

Best regards.

Nope. We thought she mighta gotten into a fight with the cat at first, but a domestic house cat (and an old one at that) could not make a cut that deep.

@SEREVENT, less than a year. She was born in Sept last year, but we got her in December... XMas eve actually.

@NgoDam, thanks. She was definitely part of my family... she was always, ALWAYS happy to see me, always ready to play... I easily considered her my best friend.

I lost my dog of 8 years last year too, Hurri. It really sucks losing a pet...I've had to go through 3 dogs dying, so I know what you're going through. Sometimes I still can't believe she (my most recent one...Maya, a German Shepherd) died.

I know I sure as hell can't believe she died. She was so fucking young, and such a good creature. I thought that maybe someone had broken in to my mom's house and stabbed her, but why? If a robber broke into our house, she probably would've licked his hand and jumped up and down trying to play with him.

I almost feel guilty myself. Not directly responsible, but like... fuck, I don't know. Had we not ever gotten her in the first place maybe she'd still be alive. Or maybe if I had stayed at my mom's house, I would've been playing with her and she would have never gotten that injury.

when I was a wee lad same sort of thing happened one of my dogs, the vet reckoned the dog had impaled its self rather than someone inflicting it on it, apparently its more common than you would expect..

Thanks patton. The thing I can't get over isn't that she's dead, but the fact that she died so young and so suddenly. 48 hours ago I didn't expect her to die... I expected her to get through the operation fine. Seeing her lying there, in eternal sleep, this young innocent thing whose life was taken so suddenly almost haunts me...

Be thankful it was quick. No animal or person should suffer a slow death. I spent 6 years of my childhood (age 7 to 13) watching my mom deteriorate from cancer until she finally passed away. A quick, unexpected end is better than being tortured to death.

I'm hoping it was quick. She wasn't in any apparent pain before the operation despite her deep wound, and I'm pretty sure she was under anesthesia when her heart failed. Still, it makes me cry knowing that this was well before her time, and it terrifies me to think "what if she was still conscious... not necessarily in pain but conscious". I can only imagine her feeling helpless and terrified... fuck.

Sorry to hear about Jazz.

My cat's 14 now with hyperthyroidism and kidney disease. Apparently those are supposed to balance eachother out but I'm expecting something to happen in the next few years.

RIP. It sucks, but I'm sure you provided a good home for her while she was alive. You should take some comfort from that.
