The board of education voted that school should be open for Veterans Day. I think we should re-evaluate other holidays as well in that case.

I saw the same kind of stuff when I lived in San Antonio. They had school on Memorial Day, but not on "Battle of Flowers" day.

/facepalm policy if I ever saw one.

When ANZAC day (April 25th) falls on a week day, it's a public holiday. But the next school day when everyone returns the flag masts are lowered to half and everyone forms for assembly at the 11th hour for a minute silence. This was usually followed by a poem and then The Last Post would be played.

It would be similar for today, 11\11. However, it is not a public holiday so school runs as usual with the above mentioned ceremonies taking place during school hours.

It was also followed by history lessons + making sure the kids knew about what happened.

I like this method, I think that so long as the children show respect whether they have the day off or not it doesn't matter.

School districts get more money the more school days they have.

I think I always had school on veterans day and not on memorial day. But I was in band so I had to march and play for memorial day.

Isn't that better? That way they can actually learn something about it at school, and also participate in the silence (you know, the silence for 2 minutes or however long it is) rather than just sleep through everything as I would do if I had a day off on remembrance day (gotta remember, this is school kids we're talking about)

Don't see why it should be day off tbh ... better to make it a school day of remembrance and learning about the historical events that took place.

I agree they should be in school with appropriate studies for the day.  that does more to teach them to appreciate Vets then sleeping till noon.

I don't see why not.  When I was at school the day was just usual studies with a 2 minute silence at 11am.  Perhaps the day could be devoted to teaching kids about why we observe remembrance day.

I went to school today...

I wish i didn't turn up, it was a disgrace in the 2 minutes silence. We couldn't even do it at 11 since no-one could sacrifice 2 minutes of their precious morning break. Thats only half the point though; its called 2 minutes silence for a reason. You're meant to sit there and think, right?

Not only was half the class still carrying on with their work, but many of them had the respect to start laughing when a bird started singing, or "gettin' raepd" as someone put it. Its really not funny...

What annoys me is that people just don't realise that wars are allways fought for a reason. For all we know, we could all be speaking German, in a torture camp because we descended from UK/Russia/Poland/US etc.

That happened to me today, I was the only one in my entire class who sat there not doing anything and being quiet for two minutes.

It is a FEDERAL holiday. States are not required to acknowledge all Federal holidays.

If I have to work, kids should have to go to school.

But, I agree with you Deez, and I think you should bring it up to the local school district or whoever decided that policy.

I highly doubt any of the gradeschool and highschool aged children are veterans.
Send the brats to school so they can learn some history.

..and so their veteran parents can have a drink or whatever.

I think they should do away with holidays in school if they are going to pick and choose which ones you have off.

My idea would be 1/2 day at school learning about what the holiday represents and where it came from, then the other half of the day should be spent volunteering at the local VA or other veterans support facilities.

This. If I had Veteran's Day off today, honestly I would have been playing Rock Band all day.

We should honor and recognize the sacrifices of our veterans every day. Those who died would hope that the generations that came after them would have the freedom to learn, if I'm making any sense.

I sat through a calculus lesson at the eleventh hour. I don't think most of my school knew today was Veteran's day, I didn't hear anything about it from anyone.

i would like to know the motivation of the people that made this decision... is it a simple reason...like...the teachers didnt wan't the parents to have to worry about babysitters or that the teachers don't get paid the same on a holiday... or is it an anti military frame of mind that made this happen?

I didn't have school today, but I think schools should be open.

I mean really, how many kids do you know that don't look at it as just "a day off"? It's a damn shame too.

Schools and federal/state offices should be closed.  No one at my employer said boo about Veteran's Day today.  Made me sad.

We have the day off, and had a veteran's assembly yesterday where the band played each branch's song and all that for some local veterans and the veteran school staff. We only have today off, though, where they used to make a 4 day weekend out of it. I heard that they changed it because a vet group said that the holiday was turning into a shopping weekend, so they have it on the original Armistice Day date. I think that's a good idea, personally.
