Tbh i think they just want to make sure the world knows he have nuclear bombs... total waste of money.Mek-Stizzle wrote:
System seems safe enough already. No point wasting money like that. MoD/Government needs to sort out its priorities imo.

Meh, we've wasted money on worse things...Mek-Stizzle wrote:

At least we're actually paying for something, instead of paying to get rid of something. £100 million to get rid of our cluster munitions comes to mind...

UK sub commanders I think are the only ones in the world who can still launch missiles themselves like Crimson Tide style.Kmarion wrote:

my bad.
I would be concerned about the explosives and detonators in nukes ageing.
They both have to work perfectly for the thing to go off, most countries can't even make these components to the standard required.
Also I've never looked into what happens to Uranium or Plutonium as it ages.
And before you laugh, the properties of Lead change with age depending on how it was initially processed.
Uranium and Plutonium are 'new' technology, the research is probably happening now.

Fuck Israel
This is what I was talking about, when I was talking about supercomputers. Currently the job of the worlds fastest supercomputer, is to, in short, model the decay of the US nuclear stockpile

The ability to start a nuclear war in the hands of some sub commander? Yerritem8. Must be a hell of a lot of scruitiny applied to them then.
Whoa... Can't believe these forums are still kicking.

That's really the key to the testing: verifying the non-nuclear pieces still work appropriately. They don't actually explode the nuclear device.Dilbert_X wrote:

There was a bit about it at the end of Crimson Tide, explaining how on such and such a date, forget when, US sub commanders were relieved of the ability to personally launch weapons and full control (or similar) was handed to the President and that only UK sub commanders still have the ability to launch weapons themselves after confirmation.Flecco wrote:

Key word there being confirmation. They have to get authorization from the higher-ups before they get to press the red button.

Well you wouldn't expect some commander to end the world would you?Hurricane2k9 wrote:

yes i would. if i was a commander and feeling suicidal, i figure i'd go out in an epic way. e.g. starting the nuclear apocalypse. or going onto live international television and putting a grenade in my mouth, making sure it splatters over the camerasSEREVENT wrote:

You do realise that if anyone else had nukes at the time they would have pretty much done the same things but in different places
