Well, all things considered, if you imprison someone and then release them into society with effectively a huge scarlet letter on their forehead, they will turn to crime when they find it hard to get a job or even find a house.

As I said, if you don't have any interest in "fixing" them, then you might as well kill them to prevent more rapes from occurring, because they will, and they do....  from the same offenders often.
Maybe if their crime was theft or robbery. We simply aren't talking about that. You don't sexually abuse kids because you cant pay your rent or you are hungry. And yes, if you do then you should never be released. That person is too volatile and society can't afford to have them amongst the general populace.
Well, we'd better legalize pot soon, so that we can free up all the prison space for the sex offenders and their life sentences.
Oh I'm all about legalizing pot. That's not very conservative of me..lol. (actually it is from the point of traditional conservatism)

Good to know...   It would also be good to end mandatory sentencing for drug offenses.

Republicans blame Palin for election loss.
Of course, McCain and the gummings of some of his fringe supporters bore no responsibility.

I'm trying to remember the context. Like every profession there would need to be some oversight/licensing.

Well, I'm in favor of legalizing prostitution as well, but yeah...  oversight would definitely need to be implemented.

Oh yeah...  and we should legalize euthanasia as well -- just like Washington state did...

This is all falling under the "victimless crimes" argument. Generally the stuff they couldn't manage to enforce if they wanted to. They exasperate the problem by pulling man power away from the stuff they can.

Well, maybe if enough people in the GOP see things the way you do, they'll actually return to smaller government and give the Religious Right the firm kick in the ass they've earned over the last 2 decades of bullshit.

I'm sure thay can understand their mistakes and regret what they've done.  But they can't learn to not have the desire to rape people.
Well, I'm operating under the assumption that this mental affliction they have can be controlled via medication and therapy like all other mental maladies can be.  I don't see how such desires are that much different from somebody with something like schizophrenia.
they aren't very different, however the consequences are far more severe if a relapse occurs.  Schizophrenics can harm others, sexual predators will harm others.  I cannot justify the potential destruction of a person's life just because a known rapist thinks they have control of their urges.  But like I said,  I'd have no problem executing sexual predators because what they do is as terrible as murder, if not worse in some ways.

This party was jacked by the religious right when Reagan had Jerry Falwell in "the war room". I actually liked Reagan and I know we disagree on his legacy. But that moment in particular signaled the start of religious pandering. The GOP, for what ever reason, thought that they had to appease those lunatics on the fringe to survive. Kinda like Obama was appeasing his constituents in Illinois with Wright.. .

I'd argue that murder is absolutely worse than any sex crime because a dead victim has no chance of recovery.

Other than that...  I can see where you're coming from.  I guess emptying our prisons of drug offenders and replacing them with sex offenders might be the best compromise we can have.

Agreed...  I definitely don't like Reagan anywhere near as much as many Republicans do, but yeah, his main failing was that connection.

The good news is that the religious nutjobs are on the decline.  They had their fun in the 90s, but now, a lot of their children are quickly realizing how fucked in the head religious fundamentalism is.

Oh yeah, and the whole Wright thing was disturbing to say the least.  The Religious Left is just as loony, but hopefully, Obama can keep them at bay.

Their agenda is transparent now. Intolerance and bigotry. Not all religious types. Just the ones who want to impose their will on everyone.

The funny thing is that Reagan and Obama are similar in their perceived ability to unite. Or as Obama put it when referencing Reagan, "the country was ready for a monumental shift. And Reagan did that." (something like that)

what's worse for the victim?  being dead or trying to put your life back together?  being dead or never trusting anyone? being dead or having to get an abortion because the animal impregnated you?  being dead or having to deal with an STD for the rest of your life?  Being dead or having to deal with your own distorted or destroyed sexuality?

I apologize if I sound like I'm just shoveling rhetoric.

sexual predators cannot be rehabilitated and should never be considered rehabilitated.  I'm not talking about some guy busted for statutory rape, i'm talking about people who commit sexual assault.

And John McCain lost because he didn't run as John McCain.  He was the desparate loser, willing to do and say anything to become president.  He spent a year telling everyone he wasn't George Bush and then chooses a VP who's basically GWB in a skirt, with sweet tits.
Couldn't have put it better myself! The negative campaigning really got silly. I really liked his losing speech that was the real John Mccain there. I have a feeling he was just a puppet and slowly lost control of his campaign. However him picking Sarah for VP shows there is hope for us all!

Often times they (the abused) choose death and commit suicide. Often times they destroy the lives of other while trying to work out their demons.

The candidate does not run the campaign. John McCain doesn't "vet" the prospective VP candidate, nor does he ultimately decide the direction. It's the incompetents running the GOP that sent him into a nose dive. Wasn't his reluctance obvious? When a candidate actually wins his position then yes they legislate as they see fit.
