Can you not 'spoil the ballot'?
e.g. write/scribble/draw all over it.

I'd like to, but nobody in my family's gotten their absentee ballots yet. I smell conspiracy...or just business as usual at the USPS.cpt.fass1 wrote:
Should you vote
Headed out tomorrow.
It's a free country. You have a right not to support either party. Now this is something that really plagues me.. I really don't want to vote, because I don't want to support either of the two parties and there failure to act and unanswered promises. I feel it's just a waste of my time, if I do go I'd vote third party that ,even if they got the popular vote, would get blocked by the Electoral Collage.
So should I really waste my time and go vote, because it's my right?
I'm still going with the big R for presidency rather than the big D, because I find one's policies less foul than the other's.

Well, if you are unconcerned with the national election, you still have local politics to consider. Bond, refferendums, sherriff, judges, district attorney, senators, representatives... There is more to it than just who gets to fuck up our country next.cpt.fass1 wrote:

but if you choose not to vote, so be it.
When you know there is no possible way a third party will get more than 10% of the vote, your vote is wasted on them. When the political environment will be able to sustain a viable third party the shift will be obvious and the significant number of votes that party will receive will make that obvious.TheAussieReaper wrote:
If you don't vote, the third part candidates are in effect, useless.Flaming_Maniac wrote:

Thinking that a third party vote is a waste so not voting is a self fulfilling prophecy.
Are you trying to make the point that by not voting, the third party candidates are stronger? lol
If the third party get enough votes in any other election for other than that of the Presidency, you'll have the 2 major parties have to deal with the minor parties to form a majority government.
The only way that the third party candidates will join one of the major parties, is if they are represented fairly.

The point of spoiling the ballot is that it solves the "should I vote if I don't want any of the candidates to win" dilemma.
It allows you to register both your desire to vote and you desire to not vote for any of the candidates on said ballot.
A deep political statement to be sure.Scorpion0x17 wrote:

Selling your vote is more American than voting for a third party.

Either I misunderstand you or you misunderstand me...
How does scribbling all over a piece of paper express your dislike of both candidates?Scorpion0x17 wrote:

Well, in proper democracies ( ), those spoiled ballots get counted.Flaming_Maniac wrote:

We have shit-all for public transportation in Orange County and they want to build a bullet train? How about half that money building a real mass transit system for OC?
There is a spot for a 'write-in candidate.' One year, I voted for Micky Mouse. Besides, if you deface the ballot, they would most likely throw it out and not count it for any of the other items being voted on.Scorpion0x17 wrote:

If that's true of the US system, then that's shit. It's very important for any electoral system to have a way for the electorate to say "we don't want any of those bunch". Though, I guess write-ins can play that role - but it means mixing the messages - does the electorate then mean "we want this other guy" or not?imortal wrote:

You think it is better to just scratch through the candidates, or spoil the ballot in some way, and still expect it to count? Wny not write in the name "N. O. Body" to make your point? Is the act of 'spoiling' it, ie defacement, a critical element in your act? YOu can also simply leave it blank. I left several areas blank when I voted; there were several state positions where the candidate did not have an opponant. I left them blank rather than adding to the number of people that voted for them simply because there was no choice.Scorpion0x17 wrote:

Your ballot is invalid because you did not finish it. So you wasted your vote.imortal wrote:

Better to sell it than to waste it on a third party (or not voting at all).
