British, Turner Prize winning artist Steve McQueen's controversial portrayal of the hunger striker Bobby Sands goes on general release tomorrow. The film caused controversy at Cannes where it won the Camera d'Or, prompting both audience walkouts and a standing ovation at its premiere. This is another film that could open some old wounds... and at a time when a British military parade is being planned for the streets of Belfast.

I am dying to see it, has anyone seen it at the advance screenings yet?

In reality I was only a kid when the hunger strikes happened, all I can vivdly remember is riots most evenings & burnt out cars / buses / lorries smoldering on the way to school in the mornings, I remember the people out on the streets banging bin lids on the ground, and black flags every where.  i've seen the movie it's a difficult watch..

The first I saw of the film was a teaser trailer on TV the last day and even though it didn't show very much it gave me the sense that it would be a difficult film to watch, difficult in terms of content that is... do you mean difficult in terms of what it's depicting or in terms of the style of the film? Because I've heard it's a very unconventional film.

I went to see the film tonight. It is a very full on, warts and all depiction of what things must have been like in that prison. It was quite upsetting actually to think that all this was happening to some of my fellow countrymen in the very same year that I was born. There was also some surprising references to my hometown area in the film!

It is quite even handed in my opinion. Cruelty and humanity are depicted on both sides of the divide and the prison officer characters are based on real life people so two dimensional 'bad guys' aren't really being served up to the audience. It is very experimental and artistic in its style and editing though so it wouldn't be to everyone's taste.
