I don't quite understand why someone needs THAT much storage on that kind of hardware?

It's to be a download machine - hence also the on board graphics.

So what is the reason for not just buying more hard drives for his current comp?

If it's for security reasons might want to factor in AV software as well, that's not cheap.

1. It's for the same guy that I built the £3500 uber-PC for, so he's already got >3TB in his 'general use/gaming PC'.

2. He gets NAV and NIS free from BT.

If it's only for storage, that CPU is hard overkill. Go for E1200.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

I am torn between them - I dunno - I'm just not sure I can bring myself to buy a CPU that a) has 'celeron' in its name and b) has less than 1MB cache... (for no good reasons)

Large amounts of storage is for naught if it is not redundant, are you just going to use one drive for back up? Otherwise maybe a raid1 set up.

Budget, but yeah, if it were for me, I'd add £200 and, get 2 more 1TBs, and run em RAID5.

Why do you need 4GB of RAM and 64-bit for a file server? And what's with the floppy drive? :p

1. I toyed with 2GB, but the mobo only takes 4GB max and RAM is cheap - so might as well.

2. Vista Home Basic OEM 64bit is the same price as Vista Home Basic OEM 32bit and it's a 64bit system.

3. I always include a floppy.

If it's just for downloading, fuck buying microsoft windows xp for a few hundred $, instead download for free ubuntu and burn it onto a cd. You can then install it really easily and get online very quickly. It will even take up less storage space than windows.

Security is great too. If your friend is only familiar with windows, download Ubuntu Mint, it's designed to be very similar in interface design to look like xp.

And it will come with firefox already installed.

i built this PC for £540 from ebuyer 3 months ago

Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3 iP35 mobo
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 G0 Stepping (2.4GHz 1066MHz)
4GB OCZ DDR2 800MHz
Zotac 8800GT 512MB DDR3
500GB Hard Drive
Hp dvd-rw drive
620W coolermaster modular PSU
Vista Home Premium 64 bit

you can change a few things round, the CPU is a bit naff on your suggestion tbh

Actually, this is the one part I'm least sure about - in what ways is Home Basic, as you say, "shit"?

It ain't being built for gaming. It's being built to sit, downloading, 24-7. It doesn't need to be fast, just reliable and energy efficient.

Rather put 2x 500GB drives and reduce the memory to 2GB max.You can download security from warez sites,no need to get into extra expenses.

Actually, if anything I'll increase the storage, not reduce it - 1TB + 0.5TB was one of the few 'minimal must haves' for this build.

In fact, re-jigged the build:

Now, can anyone give me a GOOD reason not to go with Vista Home Basic (I've not used it, so I'm not at all sure)?

In fact I can give me one good reason not to go with Vista Home Basic (well, actually, a mate told me), but anyway, it would appear Home (Basic or Premium) doesn't support the ability to remote desktop to the PC - which is required...

if its just mainly for downloads its cheaper and better to by a pre built computer.

i went down to my local staples the other day for a new desk and saw this computer in store for £400 with monitor

http://www.staples.co.uk/ENG/Catalog/ca … xedcode=WW

4GB ram
AMD Phenom 8450
500GB HD
Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit

only for £365.95 without monitor

i would suggest its better to get this computer than build one, you can get a 1TB HDD and add it to the computer which would be more than enough for downloads

between this computer and your build, i have to go with the pre-built as its a bargain

no need for the P182, get an Antec Solo instead - it's great.

Ah... well... you remember how I said that I knew how the P182 wouldn't take multiple GT280's without removal of the HDD bay... that'll that there P182... and it's for the same person... and he's already paid for it (the P182 that is)...
