I always knew that lots and lots (and lots) of people were killed during WW2 but, according to the often dubious Wikipedia, apparently 4 million Catholics were systematically killed by the Nazis... that's not too far (relatively speaking) behind the Jews tally of 6 million.

Why is it that it only ever seems to be the Jewish community that gets sympathy for these atrocities? I can't recall having even heard of the existence of a Catholic Holocaust museum... is there one?

NOTE: Neo-Nazis can fuck off out of this thread, I'm not interested in bashing the Jewish community... I just want to seriously discuss how society can so easily forget these other groups of victims.

I guess Jews care more for the dead and honouring them... We build statues, they build museums.
Also they have money to build them...

But our discussions of history and our whole view of WW2 centres somewhat around the plight of the Jews when in fact almost as many Catholics (and many Russians and other denominations) were suffering just as much. Why is that? Why does one group get the lion's share of sympathy? Is it just that they lost more (6 million as opposed to 4 million)?

Well it would seem he was fairly publicly against Catholics too... you can't 'sneakily' get rid of 4 million Catholics without the general community noticing somewhat.

I know he killed a lot of other groups like the Gypsies. I guess the Nazis killed so many people that in predominantly Christian Europe the numbers of Catholics were going to mount up. It may be partially the case that they killed lots of people for other reasons and they just happened to be Catholics.

Here's what Wikipedia says...

"Nazi ideology stressed the "racial purity of the German people" and persecuted those it perceived either as race enemies or Lebensunwertes Leben, that is "life unworthy of life". This included Jews, Slavs, Roma along with the German homosexuals, mentally disabled, communists and others. To carry out these beliefs, the party and the German state which it controlled organised the systematic murder of approximately six million Jews (in what has become known as the Holocaust), four million Catholics, and about five million other people, mainly Russians, Poles and Roma. Many thousands of political enemies of the Nazi regime, along with German gays, people with disabilities, and religious minorities were also killed."

...sounds like they received the same approach and treatment as the Jewish community to me.

The one in Berlin didn't have too many crucifixes floating about, I can tell you that.

Never been to the one in Israel, I'll ask CameronPoe.

What I don't understand is; Hitler wanted to have a nation full of blond and blue-eyed men yet he was the opposite of that. Hope I didn't just went offtopic too much.

I could be wrong about this, but in terms of percentage population, the Nazis killed more Jews than Catholics, indicating that Catholics were not being wiped out with the same dedication as the Jews were. No doubt Christians, Muslims and most other political/religious/ethnic groups suffered under the Nazis, but in terms of percentage of the groups that were killed I think the Jews and Gypsies suffered the most.

Hmmm ... that isn't consistent with my understanding.  I know that there were many Catholic Priests in the concentration camps, due to their opposition to the Nazis ... but, four million Catholics?  That seems high to me.

If Hitler wished to systematically wipe out Catholics his political base would never have developed: he made his political name in extremely devoutly Catholic Bavaria.

Correct. He never mentioned publicly hes against Catholicism since German population was exclusively catholic at the time and he needed their support. He hated Jews because as he said "they are stealing work positions from Catholics".

Perhaps it was more of a coincidence that those ones were catholics, after all Jews were specifically targeted, other groups were as well who may have been catholics but they were likely picked because they were handicapped or something. And when you think, how many religions were big in Germany at the time?

Catholicism and Protestantism (in Prussia).

Does this come as news to anyone? I don't get it. Who in the world thought it was only the Jews?

As far as I knew it was everyone who wasn't an "Arian".
