I was just about to download Portal: Prelude, however, I saw this:

Portal: Prelude.com wrote:

Here's a subtle message we just received:
Wow, what a train wreck that piece of shit is. Did you test any of this? On anyone besides yourselves? Portal took the time to have something called gameplay. Something your game seriously lacks. You can't just throw together some interesting looking rooms and pretend that's a mod. Portal teaches the player techniques and then shows the player how to combine them and use them to create new techniques. You didn't have to teach the player the same ones, but "crouch in mid air?" Go fuck yourself. Have you ever played a video game before? Gameplay is about a learning process. Here's an idea, next time you want to make a shitty mod go make another overly stylized webpage instead. Seems like you guys put more time into that than the game. Fuck you! - Griff

In fact, that's the first insulting email we received on the 700 messages we read so far. That's the kind of things that make me go mad and stop working on making things right with this mod... I mostly lost nine month of my life, for free, for you, and now I'm getting insulted. That's unbelievable.

You can have your own opinion on what we did, but for Christ sake, stop fucking insulting us! We love critisism, we received a lot during the last two days, and I received a lot too since I'm making content for the Source Engine. Some where really hard, but still, it allows you to go further. But when people say "FUCK YOU", I don't really call it "criticism".
Now I really Do not know weather it is worth downloading this game.

Nerd rage.

But yeah it does sound pretty disjointed. The trailer made it look very hard.

But i'm going to download it, play it, and give it my own judgement instead of taking some random idiots word for it.

You need to make a profile if thats what its asking. I dunno it might take you to a different one because i'm logged in.

If i were you and having trouble with fileplanet (which isnt suprising considering how much it sucks) i'd just wait until later. Fileplanet got 24 hour exclusivity so it'll be on good sites this evening.

I agree with most of that nerd rage e-mailer's comments. Valve is great in implementing difficulty and learning curves, and most notably in Portal. They teach you a technique or two, then you have to use it, and then advance it yourself. But in Portal Prelude, it seems to just be trial-and-error 90% of the time. Doesn't mean I won't play it anymore, or won't finish it, but I can tell the experience hasn't been completely off-the-hook like the trailer or other reviews made it seem.

I got a few chambers in, managed to get myself trapped in a room then quit. I'll carry on later.

Ugh, I hate to keep complaining, but this game really sucks balls. There's a fine line between trial-and-error in a fun, learning sort of way, and the kind of trial-and-error that's repetitive and extremely frustrating. 9 months of work for this? Overhyped tbh. These guys should've tested the game more. There are so many annoying and angering parts simply because of the way they want you to go about things.

I agree the puzzles are too hard. In a bad way. Some of them are pretty poorly thought out.

I got stuck again. No idea how i'm meant to get up the ledge i'm at.

Plus there's too much luck involved. Basically you do a quicksave, then try something over and over and over again until finally you get lucky and it works. Really fucking annoying.

I almost want to send them an e-mail bitching them out in hopes of it getting featured on the website

How far are you? I just got to 16.

Spoiler (highlight to read):
I got into the maintenence area and thought 'aww awesome this is where you go in Portal', and then they chucked me back in a test chamber. Then while trying 16 the game crashed.

I keep getting the feeling that i'm using exploits I knew from Portal to get past these puzzles. I can see no other way of doing them. It's just the 'shoot a portal from the entrance of a portal then quickly step back' trick.

Anyway going to bed. I think it's alright so far. It's kept me playing at least. However a lot of the puzzles need serious work. I think TFV was move enjoyable so far.

I just finished 16, I think I finished 17 too, I'm not sure.

I think they use too many turrets. Instead of the game being a "hmm let's see how I can get around this" / use your brain kind of puzzle, they just keep dumping you in rooms full of turrets and expect you to be able to pull off some fancy moves while getting shot by a million fucking turrets. Only ways I've found to get around those kinds of obstacles was to just charge in and hopefully knock a few turrets over. It's just attempt after attempt with the stupid fucking turrets.

I liked the original Portal and Portal Flash Version mappack because they made you use your brain and find different routes and try different manuevres and introduce you to new ones. This game just wants you to go through it with brute force and doesn't utilize any new techniques.

I'm tempted to ask the developers, "9 months of hard work and now you're happy to finally release your baby... did you even test it beforehand?" Some of this shit is just so impossible and frustrating, you think they'd want to ease it up just a little bit so people don't get so pissed off and quit playing.

Oh, and these fucking robot voices are getting on my nerves. It was entertaining at first, but now they just ramble on and on and they're not funny no matter how hard they try.

Plus I got clipped into a security camera and couldn't move so I had to restart from my last save point. Real annoying.

I'm on 16 and haven't used a single exploit.

I haven't used that trick either, but it's definitely been difficult without it. I'm getting sick of these motherfucking turrets. In the original Portal it was manageable, in TFV there weren't many at all (that I remember), but in this game it's just ridiculous.

I also don't like how they leave you with very little options. They pretty much put the dark texture (the one you can't shoot portals on) on every single wall except the one they want you to use. I'm sure it would be much more fun and open-ended using different parts of the map to complete the objective.

Right now I'm on 19. 18 was seriously the lamest chamber ever. They built it up to make such a big deal, and I saw a ton of buttons, conveyors, and some boxes, but after walking around towards the back, it's basically stand on a button and shoot the wall past the door, then go through a portal and you're done.

Completed it. It was ok except 19 which was dumb repetition. Spoiler (highlight to read):
The end boss fight was much better than the one in portal since you get swung around at like 300Mph.

I thought the exact same thing but eventually you realise you're missing something, a cube. You have to noclip to get the thing or restart 18 since you can't backtrack to get the cube which is what 18 was all about.

So I'm going to need the cube from 18 in #19? Why do they even do that? So dumb. Anyways, I think I should be ok because I remember seeing an FAQ on their site and reading questions about "I didn't get the cube, help!" and they said there were secret passageways. I guess I'll try finding those hidden paths, but if it gets too annoying, I'll just come back to 18.

So I went back to their website, and the head guy posted an e-mail he received that had many of the same complaints I do. (Just head to the front page to read it). All the stupid creator does is make excuse after excuse and keeps telling everyone that he told them over and over the game was going to be hard... still doesn't make up for how ridiculously annoying this game is.

It is moderately difficult, far from impossible. 19 is the only chamber I'd say is actually stupid because it isn't a puzzle, it's repetition of one long technique again and again until you get lucky enough times in a row.

Yeah I beat the game earlier today. Aside from the cool behind-the-scenes stuff at the end, this game was mostly a frustrating waste of time. Back to TFV and good ol' vanilla Portal...

What was the repetitive/lucky part of the stage?  I didn't find anything in 19 too long/arduous/repetitve.

Otherwise though the mod did kinda suck hard. Kept me interested till the end but i was mostly playing it to finish it, not really enjoying it. The voices and dialogue was awful and only served to make me wait outside doors for ages. I did use the whole 'shoot a portal from the entrance of a portal then quickly step back' trick and even used portal bumping on one stage (I figure his way of doing the stage was much more convoluted, although i can't say i really tried to find his solution) .

I much prefer puzzle games that make you think hard about the puzzle, but once you have the solution it's fairly simple to implement. I felt that this game was more about implementation then thinking.

I don't think I'll even bother if it's that hard .

Bouncing the ball about until you found the "sweet" combination. The part when you had the platforms which moved too because it was absolute luck that they wouldn't move after you've fired a portal on them. I used portal bumping too but there weren't many places where it helped a lot anyway.
