Ok. I have a horrible track record with cars. I need some serious help in considering my next one.

I've been looking into a used Audi A3 (because its sexy), but thats later

Some requirements:

Needs to be not lame
could be found for under $10,000 used
good mileage (over 20 city)

A3's (or A4's) are very, very nice cars. I know it's for later, but trust me - you'll be quite happy with one.

Mitsubishi eclipse
The 2nd gen GSX (awd turbo) or GS-T (fwd turbo)

Mitsubishi 3000GT
VR-4 (twin turbo) or just normal 3000gt

Take a mid 90's civic swap a b16a2 add turbo application

Honda accord with F22 or H22a

Subaru WRX (non STi, dont get the STi the regular wrx can be made faster for less than the cost of an STi)

Honda Del Sol with: b16a2 swap or h22a swap + turbo if you wanna be a super badass

Mitsubishi Eclipse 3rd gen (dont get the v6, dont make the same mistake I did)

Honda Accord.  and don't start swapping shit around.  Unless you want to lose all resale value and enjoy constant frustration.  If you want something a little more fun you might be able to find an early S2000 for around $10k.

Be nice to know where you lived, and not have it be by longitude and latitude....

What kind of car do you want, and besides price and milage what do you look for in a car? Any expectations, or things you don't like?

The picture's a modified version of the stock Toyota AE86 Trueno.
Or a Corolla if you like.

Can be found for around $8,000 - $9,500 in Australia.

Drifts well if you know how

Like the most Legendery drift car ever, AE86 GT-S. Maybe apart from Silvia S14.

On topic; I woulda thought you can get the previous model Honda Civic for that kinda money..

Unless you want to be constantly with a wrench in your hand, get something less than 10 years old and do not buy someone else's project.

I would say a Honda S2000, though. Those can be had for REAL cheap with the first gens that still had the 9000 rpm redline. 1.5 gens had it at 8k because the owners couldn't drive and had to be made idiot-proof in other ways.

My stop is coming up, so I will write more later ...

Audi A4 is my, (realistic,) dream car. As with you, that one's for later.

Personally I like the humble mass-manufactuered Jap imports; a Mitsi or a Toyota. You've got to shop around because there are a lot of shitty ones but if you find one that suits you, it's cheap, both with the initial cost and to run, plus they're pretty reliable, (in most cases.)

don't hate on VWs, i will break out the v-dub commercials.

for under 10k, there's too much. Gotta be more specific but off the top of my head find a nice Volvo from the mid to late 90s, those fuckers last forever.

Sgt. Gene has a thing for unreliable DSM cars ... bad idea.

If you want something with style, look at used Acuras. There are quite a few of them out there. For instance, RSX or CL. You can also look at second-gen BMW M3s. Those are pretty reliable despite the age.

As I said in my previous post, Honda S2000. Another great roadster is the Mazda Miata. Those cars can be had for so cheap (buy in the upcoming winter) and they are SO easy to get speed and great handling out of. Everything about them is cheap. Don't worry about size, either. I'm 6'3" and I fit in the driver's seat. The Toyota MR2 is also another thought, 2nd or 3rd gen.

I would personally stay away from the 240sx market because the prices are so artificially inflated because of the drifting craze it's ridiculous. And since you're wanting a car that's reliable and good on gas, you're going to have a hard time finding a fair-priced S14(a) (1996-98) in good condition. I would just stay away from them, there are other good and cheap RWD cars out there (see previous paragraph). But another Nissan worth a thought or two is the 300ZX.

One that you MIGHT consider is a Porsche 993-gen 911. Be aware of high repair and maintenance costs, though, but it might be something to think about it if you can find one in really good shape and within your budget.

But in the end, anything Japanese you are going to have a hard time going wrong with on day-to-day usability and there are plenty of tuning options out there should you decide you want to play a bit.
