I live in Houston and was around when Hurricane Ike went through.
Been listening to the radio a lot since at that time I didn't have power but I heard a lot of stupid things people did during this time of crisis.
One of these incidents were three people decided to camp out on a pier, I believe there was some building where they decided to camp inside in, while Hurricane Ike made landfall.
Ike came through and caused significant damage to where the three men were stranded on the pier with no food or water. Rescue teams had to be called to save them. This of coarse pissed some those rescue teams off because they had to save people from their own stupidity instead of saving people who actually needed it.
Many other incidents happen where people had to be rescued from their cars because they thought their tank Humvee could make it through four feet of flood water...
It got me thinking as to people who put themselves in damage to the point where it has to affect the rescue team's priority duties, should probably face some sort of penalty during a crisis situation or disaster. Perhaps being fined of reckless endangerment of one self in a disaster area?
Seemed reasonable but then this got me thinking about someone who didn't' want to be saved because of paying the fine.
If they got rescued against their wished could they sue?
What do you guys think?
Should there be a fine as a deterrent for making poor decisions against your well being, personal safety, and hindering rescue crews?
