To me thats what makes a true hero, not thinking they did anything special.Scorpion0x17 wrote:

I can almost guarentee that if went up to a 'hero', any 'hero' and said "man, you're a hero", he'd say "no I'm not".
you said in another thread that you didnt think the jews who survived the death camps were heroes, but the ones who fought in the streets were.Braddock wrote:

were the people who survived the death camps really being passive? im pretty sure it took some tough guts to survive in there knowing that half of your family is dead and missing, not knowing whats going to happen to you. the passive act of suffering in that situation would have resulted in death. it took action to stay alive in there, even if that action was not involved in combat.
honestly, a hero could probably be anyone who stands up to amazing odds even though they know they probably wont make it out the same as they went in. Those people look at the odds in front of them and tell them to gtf outta the way
I cant answer this question seriously while I think of the people Ive served with, the people Ive lost and the stupidity and meaninglessness of four letter words.

Jesus is just an urban legend.

I think it is a situation, but I'm sure you could 'know' you have what it takes to react heroically.SEREMAKER wrote:

There has been more than one occasion where I have done something (given the heimlich to someone choking at an El Torito; jumped into a car while it was in motion doing donuts in the middle of a busy street with a dude slumped over in the driver's seat to stop it; I even jumped off the bus once in shithole LA on the way to a college class to help an old lady who tripped on a driveway lip) that I didn't expect myself to do.
Do I think I'm a hero because of those acts? No, but it surprised me that I reacted so quickly and in the way that I did.
PS - Dude that got the heimlich didn't even spring for my meal after.

As spoken by an anonymous US battlion commander prior to the Desert Storm ground war,
"Heroes are made when someone makes a mistake. We don't want any heroes today."
"Heroes are made when someone makes a mistake. We don't want any heroes today."
There was a well known rule among POWs;
first one there is the first one to leave.
McCAin has been groomed his whole life for the office he is running for now. His daddies was a senator as well.
If he had violated that rule it would have followed him the rest of his life.
Not to take anything away from the guy, but lets not attribute heroics where they don't belong.
He was a war hero. He would have been a yellow dog to leave early and in my mind he deserves respect for that.

I mean, as long as we are raiding the '80s anyway...
If I started a retaliation thread every time I was fiercely attacked for my thoughts and opinions, they would have to open up a new wing for me.Braddock wrote:
I don't mean to start a petty 'retaliation' thread but I have recently been fiercely attacked for my thoughts and opinions on the issue of heroism, particularly in relation to war and combat.
For me heroism requires a proactive effort of courage and bravery, not a passive act of suffering or bad luck.
Discuss.
A hero can be more than what you describe Braddock. An organ donor, or a anonymous charity donor is also a hero for example.
an act of heroism does nothing more than decribe the hero.SEREMAKER wrote:

It's hard to define, as everyone has their own opinion but the main theme is always selflessness.
McCain was a hero alright. But that doesn't automatically qualify him for president. Bush dodged his service and he did a great job...........oh wait....
I'm sorry but I just wouldn't regard that as heroism. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to insult the memory of them; I would regard them as incredibly tough and durable... I'd even go so far as to say they were amazing in terms of these qualities but it's still not heroism in my book. No offence.Schwarzelungen wrote:

medal + citation = hero, although no need to let something like "the truth" get in the way of legend..
