WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Democrats on Tuesday criticized the multimillion-dollar pay packages awarded to the former chief executives of Fannie Mae (FNM.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) and Freddie Mac (FRE.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) at a time when taxpayers could foot a massive bill for the companies' bailout.

In a joint letter to Fannie and Freddie's regulator, Senators Charles Schumer of New York and Jack Reed of Rhode Island said the combined pay and bonus packages of about $24 million should be revised.

"We find it way out of line," they said in the letter, saying the severance pay for former Fannie Mae CEO Daniel Mudd and former Freddie Mac CEO Richard Syron should be questioned especially if any financial losses could have been caused by errors in management.
Are you kidding me? Way out of line doesn't even begin to explain it.

OBAMA TROUBLED

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, at a news conference in Riverside, Ohio, said he wrote to Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and Lockhart on Monday urging them to put the interest of taxpayers first.

"I'm troubled by the news reports that the outgoing CEOs may be in line to receive multimillion-dollar severance packages as part of the Treasury plan," the Illinois senator told reporters.

"It would be unacceptable for executives of these institutions to earn a windfall at a time when U.S. Treasury has taken unprecedented steps to rescue these companies with taxpayer resources," he said.
OTHER PAY PACKAGES

Outrage against high severance packages for U.S. corporation chiefs has been brewing for many years.

While some may consider the "golden parachute" for Mudd and Syron high, it is a fraction of what was given to other CEOs whose companies were hammered by the mortgage crisis.

For example, former Countrywide Financial Corp CEO Angelo Mozilo took home $120 million, ex-Merrill Lynch (MER.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) CEO Stanley O'Neal received a $161 million retirement package and former Citigroup (C.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) CEO Chuck Prince got $39.5 million in stock, options, bonus and perks.

Mudd's predecessor, Franklin Raines, received an annual pension of $1.37 million when he retired from Fannie in late 2004.

Raines was also in line to receive $5.8 million in stock options and $8.7 million in deferred compensation to be paid through 2020, according to a U.S. regulatory filing.

Former Freddie Mac Chief Executive Leland Brendsel received a pay package of more than $50 million.

Both CEOs left their companies during a massive accounting scandal.

Sadly this happens all the time and often results in companies closing down while the CEO's responsible walk away (after even just a few short months of work) with millions of dollars in payout packages.

This time it's the tax payer who suffers, but in all other cases it's the share holders who really suffer. They get to see a stock price plummet to near zero and lose all their money, while the CEO of the failed company walks away with a few million in "good bye" money.

It happens all the time.. but not always while the tax payer is footing the bill. That's only been a few times.. sadly.

Thought this is pretty relevent kmar, one of (if not the) worst cases I've ever seen:

Outrage over Hardie boss's $8.8m payout

James Hardie was in full knowledge of what Asbestos related diseases their product was capable of, but continued to hire and disregard many safety checks which resulted directly in death from lung diseases such as Mesothelioma cancer to it's former employees.

The above article was when the Hardie CEO walked away, after stalling again and again on compensation for victims and was gifted almost $9million as his payout for services.

Bernie Banton who at the time was one of the more vocal in getting the company to provide compensation has died since the article due to his lung cancer illness.

Not a cent of his money went to any of the victims or a charitable organization.

``It is just disgraceful that they could reward someone for stealing money from victims' pockets.''
Yea.. that's pretty bad.

I wish I could get paid millions of dollars to completely fuck up and cripple a huge financial organization.

How much experience do you actually need to be totally incompetent these days?

Shit, I could be good at it too. Didn't the CEO of Home Depot get shit canned a few years back after only one year? I beleive he received around 50 million as well.

Some did, some are otherwise talentless sociopaths who made it through working the system.

i think it is disgraceful that CEOs who run their company into bankruptcy get these so-called 'bonuses'.  i would think it would behoove the shareholders to form up a commission of their own to investigate what caused the downfall.  said bonus is to be held in limbo until at which time the CEO is cleared of wrong doing.  if CEO is guilty, then the bonus is withdrawn and distributed back into the company.

interestingly, nobody complains as vehemently when actors make a stinker of a movie that tanks a studio's profits yet still the actor gets paid their usual 10-20 million dollary salary.

The way we see the economy today is directly related to the Bush Administration's actions for the last 8 years.  Not talking at all about personal income.  Im talking about a continuation of the policies that have lead to bank failures, government rescues and all the other stuff that republicans always complain about.

its like the government saying "Hey rich people, you guys are going to do the exact same things and make the exact same mistakes that poor people do and make.  but fuck it, youve already got money, we'll give you a break."
