The chief constable has said he is frustrated that no one has been convicted of the Omagh bombing.

Sir Hugh Orde was speaking on the eve of the tenth anniversary of the Real IRA attack in which 29 people died.

He said it is highly unlikely that anyone will ever be convicted of the atrocity.

"Unless we get something new, it is highly unlikely that the families will ever get a successful judicial outcome in terms of a criminal trial."

It was the worst atrocity of the troubles, but no-one has been convicted of the 29 murders in Omagh 10 years ago.
Michael Gallagher, who lost his son Aidan in the explosion, finds it difficult to accept that those responsible haven't been caught.
"It's been an unbelievable catalogue of failures," is how he put it.
"There was a feeling that those responsible were going to be caught very shortly. I never thought I would be sitting talking about it 10 years after the event.

The police devoted huge resources to the investigation in its early stages and vowed that the killlers would be caught.
But the former Police Ombudsman Nuala O'Loan later published a damning critique of that investigation, accusing the police of letting down the victims and their families.

The only person charged directly with the 29 murders, south Armagh man Sean Hoey, was cleared of all charges last December.

His trial ended with the judge severely criticising the police, accusing two key prosecution witnesses of lying and labelling much of the evidence presented in court as useless

If find it unbelievable that no one has been convicted, after 10 years of the worst single terrorist atrocity of the troubles. The victims families were told days after the bombing that the Police knew the names of the people who did it. Yet the police systematically failed at every point of the investigation. Contaminating evidence, failing to pick up evidence, using unreliable witnesses and labelling much of the evidence presented in court as useless.

Watched a documentary about the survivor victims two nights ago. The fuckers responsible should burn. I won't lie to you - I actually cried watching the program.

A truly horrible atrocity and quite possibly the final nail in the coffin of militant Republicanism. That was the watershed for many of the most ardent Republicans. It is sadly yet another travesty in the sad history of the troubles that no one paid a price for what happened on that day.

I think justice is blind, actually very blind.

I can't believe this happened only 10 years ago, it seemed longer to me.  Probably due to the fact I was only 12 when it happened so I can't really remember it well.

RIP to all those who lost their lives that day.

I don't know anything about the incident, but the quote above tells me that the police don't want to catch those who did it. Does that make sense for those of you who know more about this?

in the murky world of Northern Irish counter terrorism it's hard to know what is what.  A British soldier that had infiltrated the IRA as a bomb maker called  Kevin Fulton claims that he had informed his  handler ( RUC police special branch) 3 days before hand that a major bomb was intended for Omagh by dissident republicans - the "rumour" is that the RUC let the bomb through to protect an agent other than Fulton who had infiltrated the Real IRA cell responsible for the bomb, only Ronnie Flanagan can really answer these questions - yeah right, exactly..

More damning evidence against Ronnie Flanagan & the British state, they knew fine rightly what those fuckers were up to and didn't stop it. Fall on your sword and kill yourself Ronnie like you promised you would when you were attacking Nuala O'loan for calling your officers a bunch of incompetent cunts who deliberately put the investigation in jeopardy, truth be told you didn't want them to uncover your involvement (special branch) in the whole thing..

The UK's electronic intelligence agency GCHQ recorded mobile phone exchanges between the Omagh bombers on the day of the attack, the BBC has learned.

The BBC's Panorama says the calls were monitored as the bombers drove the car bomb into the County Tyrone town.

The attack on 15 August 1998 was the worst single atrocity of the Troubles, and killed 29 people.

Either Special branch did want to protect their agent in the Real IRA cell which carried out the bombings - what part did they play I wonder? maybe made the bomb, decided where to place it? they must of furnished Special Branch with the phone numbers for sure in advance.  Or, The British State deliberately sacrificed 31 men / women / children / unborn - to solidify the GFA agreement. As the ex-cop says "someone somewhere made a conscious decision" within the British state. Who and why?

Vigilantism was ripe in the troubles. Me wonders why someone didn't or hasn't carried out there own form of "justice".

this is dealing with the failings of the state Jord, the government's failure to protect it's citizens. did you even watch the programme? it's about the obstruction of justice.  What do you think  the reaction would be in Great Britain if it came to light that the British state was monitoring the 7/7 bombers during the bombing of London but didn't act on it? The only Justice that the majority of people are interested in here, is Legal justice, we would prefer if the state didn't deliberately obstruct it, or, that it wasn't dispensed by people in balaclavas if it's all the same..
