You can argue that the US had to drop them after the intense fighting just for Iwo Jima. The Japanese civilians rather than face capture would hurl themselves from the cliffs and commit suicide, for fear of what would happen to them.
Invading Japan could have potentially been even more costly to both sides. I don't agree that Nuclear force was an appropriate action, especially on civilians but history can be the judge of that.

That's why war crimes prosecutions are a load of bullshit. The only ones that get charged are the losers. Either do away with the concept of war crimes altogether or apply the 'law' consistently.

Do you know how fucked up the Japanese/Germans were at this point in history. If they had the same capabilities they would've destroyed the Allies outright without remorse.
