My subscription to Norton will expire in a week (thankfully) and I'm looking for something that will slow down the comp less and preferably have better antivirus and firewall capabilities than Norton.  I know Ryan made a list of AVs, but that was a year ago and many new products have popped up.  Any advice?

I'm looking for an anti-virus package with firewall, port stealthing, blah blah etc, not just an anti-virus module.  I had a look at NOD 32 and I'm pretty sure just NOD 32 doesn't have this (correct me if I'm wrong).

You can get Eset Smart Security (NOD32 AV + Firewall), but i personally dont like it. I much prefer Kaspersky Internet Security 2009.

Don't download porn.exe

You can avoid viruses easy just with a bit of common sense - I haven't had a virus in over a year and haven't used an anti virus/anti malware whatever else is out there, just keep clear of untrusted sites.

I use Kaspersky

Interface is a bitch (in IS7 at least), but once you've managed to set it up it works like a dream in the background and you never hear from it again until it finds something.

NOD32 + hardware firewall
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

I use nod32 and the default windows firewall does the job quite well.

I use Avast! myself, and it's been good to me over the years I've used it.

No Firewall with it, though

Is that another part of the full version of nod32 hardware firewall?

hardware firewall as in a PC or a router to filter internet traffic.

I use Avast + sygate firewall on my laptop and avg + windows firewall on my desktop.  I've had no problems with either and only don't use sygate on my desktop because it is not vista 64 compatible.

Bitdefender works great and uses very little system resources. I also use a SonicWall TZ-180w which handles my firewall, antivirus, wireless and even deep packet inspection all at the firewall/router level for added security.

The best antivirus is in your head, and is called "common sense".
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

yes but common sense also says to always have a backup plan (as in anti virus, firewall)

Firewall, maybe, could be good to have, but antivirus is way overrated, and uses WAY too much resources for my taste.

Used to use an antivirus, along with a firewall.  Now I don't use any protection (ba-dum-ching!) because I'm not an idiot and they take up to many resources
