I've just been reading BT's fair use policy.

http://bt.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/bt.cfg/p … p_cats=346

Note if you are a heavy user we will only restrict your speed. Service will not be stopped, so you will still be able to upload and download. We will not impose any restrictions outside of peak times.
Again. No warning whatsoever. All I do is download the odd Steam game or Xbox 360 demo. It began at the start if the month and the start of a new contract. But thats now why I made another post. This is:

They only impose the limit during peak times? What a load of crap, iit's been a steady 135k for 3 WEEKS SOLID.

This is bs. Plain and simple. They've even breaking their own damn fair use policy.

Peak time is 7am until midnight BTW.

Try downloading at 1am, also dump BT, their service is utter shite at the best of times. How much are you paying currently and what speed are you paying for?

£18.99 a month

And we're paying for 'up to 8Mb'. What that means is less than an 8th of that but i'm not really bothered because its usually fast enough and we do live in the country after all.

We got that one specifically for the unlimited downloads..

Edit: I don't think BT's "peak time" is 7am to midnight btw, judging from what they say after about P2P:

Because of this, we restrict P2P speeds if it's having a negative impact on the online experience of the majority of our customers. We normally place restrictions in the evenings at peak time, but we do apply them during the day if a lot of customers are using P2P at the same time.
Peak time =/= all day

That'll be going up to 24.99 soon.

Try Freedom2Surf, I'm on their 8meg Broadband for gamers package and quite frankly it's perfect I can't fault it at all. Line synchs at 8128kbps every time, slowest DL i've ever had is 625KBps. Download limit is 60GBpm which you really should get close to, between midnight and 7am any downloads don't count towards your limit so do big files over night if you need to. CoD4 pings average about 25-30, BF2 15-20.

Oh and it's 24.99 a month the same as your BT package will be in 2 months

Get your own router though, I don't like the cheapies that ISPs provide for free.

Wow I download nowhere near 60Gb a month.

Not even half that. But its too much for BT apparently

Apparently, BT are struggling to provide everyone enough bandwidth for their BT Vision service, so you, the lowly normal broadband user are getting fucked over so BT Vision users can watch last nights TV today.

That's the rumour anyway and it really wouldn't supprise me.

I've just checked the Freedom2Surf site. They have a thing that checks whether or not your location is suitable for 8Mb speeds. Like I said further up our current one is 'up to 8Mb', but the best download speeds i ever get are on Steam and they're 512kb/s.

Anyway this checker looks at my phone number and postcode, and says...:

Congratulations, BT report your local exchange is ADSL enabled, and your line could have ADSL speeds of up to 7.00 Mb/s.
I'm getting -er by the second. BT suck. Why does my connection always (relatively) suck if the line is that good?

100% BT's problem, they're used by so many people they just don't seem to be able to cope.

Going with lesser known ISPs is nearly always a good idea, like F2S, I've not met many people who have heard of them, they got bought by Pipex not long back, I thought ooooh shit it's going to go the way Pipex has and be utter shite but thankfully all they did was buy tons of new servers and kept the two companies totally separate, so they have the resources of a huge company but the user base of a relatively small one, win all round

8 Megabits per second, what BT is advertising, translates to a transfer speed of 1024 kilobytes per second. This speed also depends on the speed of the server you're downloading from and any other traffic currently on your line.

Well the problem now is we renewed the BT subscription for an entire year at exactly the same time this crap started. So if we stop now we're going to have to pay an early cancellation fee.

Well I guess it would be better than staying with BT anyhow.

Well alright then so I get about half that. Fair enough. Angry ranting results in more angry ranting. The rest of my points are still valid.

Gutted, you could argue they aren't providing an acceptable service and get it cancelled for free, Consumer Direct will give you the relevant jargon to write a letter to them and make it sound official, tey don't cost anything and will get Trading Standards involved if they start taking the piss and don't do anything. There are minimum standards of service for broadband (I can't think of the exact ratio of bandwidth:advertised rate but it's a long way off what you're getting).

Well so far today Dad's phoned up the new number they gave us only to be told that there IS no limit placed on the line and there's a fault somewhere.

Honestly these people should all be sacked. There IS a limit placed on the line. BT's line tester even says so.

Surely if you have a contract with BT for 12 months then after that point you should be able to cancel it.

Anyhow welcome to the world of BT,nothing with BT is ever fast .They work at there own speed all the time.....

I've been eagerly awaiting the end of my contract with BT in October. A man phoned up a week ago offering me lower prices for another year contract, I loled down the phone at him.

paying for up to 8mb and downloading at 120kb's max is a joke, when I first went with BT I was downloading at 500kb's + I phoned to complain and they said they'll be happy to terminate my contract at a cost

I don't believe it I think they've removed the limit .

https://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g2/Spidery_Yoda/speedtest3.jpg

Hmm. Still nowhere near 5000-6000 but its a bit more like what i'm used to and a hell of a lot better than a measley 135k .

Now to see if it stays like this...

I also want to see the official bt speed tester to see if they've completely removed the limit or not. Unfortunately you have to wait 3 hours between each bt speed test and we did one just before.

730k is still pretty aweful but it's a lot better than you were on.

I'd still look at getting the contract cancelled.

What speed connection do you pay for? If 8meg then yeah that's pretty terrible.

EDIT: Don't get kbps mixed up with KBps BTW.

No this is normal. Your speed in the speedtests is measured in kilobits, download speeds from something like firefox are measured in kilobytes.

If he has 1-2Mb broadband yeah it's perfectly normal.

No its not fixed. I did the official BT speed test and now it says its being limited at 750k instead

Its not over yet. However its a hell of an improvement. Before whenever I wanted to see a youtube vid I had to leave it for about half an hour. Now it loads as fast as I can watch it .

Ok what are they doing over there.

Just did another bt speed test.

Now the limit is 4000k.

I guess thats as fixed as its gonna get for now. There's still 2000 thats just sitting there but 4000 is good enough for now. Why do they keep the limit if its that high? Why not just remove it completely to allow me to squeeze the most out of my line?
