Well, my internet has been driving me nuts the past few weeks. I've tried phoning BT, they were no help, i've tried reinstalling the homehub firmware, i've tried chainging the microfilters, i've tried swapping the homehub for our old router, and while the latest thing i've tried seems to have helped slightly (I changed the cable going from the microfilter to the router), it's still not right. BT said there was nothing wrong with our line. I've done virus and spyware scans. As far as I know, when Dad is here and he connects his laptop wirelessly to the hub, he gets the same problem.

Whats been happening the past few weeks is this. The internet suddenly, and for no reason, started being very very slow and it disconnected completely randomly and sometimes for hours at a time.

After changing the cable its not disconnected me (but then, I only did it 5 mins ago), but its still incredibly slow. Except the Homehub doesnt seem to think it is. Look at the screenshot.

With my ethernet cable I get this:
https://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g2/Spidery_Yoda/speedtest-1.jpg

And if I change to wireless I get this:
https://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g2/Spidery_Yoda/speedtestwireless.jpg

As you can see the Hub seems to think I have broadband at a decent speed, however my computer thinks otherwise.  Since then i've swapped back to my other router (A Netgear one), and I get the same download speed.

Can anybody think of why this would be happening? A lot of bandwidth is being lost somewhere, and I have no idea where.

woo maidenhead server.

There must be some reason for you getting download speeds of 15kbps.

Wonder what it could be

Also, a week or so ago it went back to being perfectly normal for 2 days. Everything ran at the right speeds and I didn't get disconnected at all. Then suddenly it disconnected at the end of the 2nd day and went back to being crippled internet.

Whenever I download anything, from anywhere it downloads at roughly 15kb/s. Just now for example i'm downloading the latest Ad-Aware, just to make sure there's nothing on the computer thats doing it, and its crawling along at 13kb/s or so.

I'm totally confused.

I had this issue and it was a Virus on a PC.

Try connecting PC's to the network one at a time (i.e. all the others unplugged or turned off), and see if you can see if that helps. I know you said you have already done scans, but just because you've done scans.... doesn't mean nothings there

Oh I see. Thanks.

I'll do more scans then I guess.

You should check how far from the exchange you are, also you could try the test socket on the bt socket in the wall.

Also ping some websites from the comand prompt and see what speed you can ping the website,eg google

Well i fully updated AVG Anti Virus and Ad-Aware, and run scans.

Ad-Aware found loads of privacy cookies, and 2 'critical' objects. So they're gone. The AVG one is still running. 3 hours 19 minutes 43 seconds so far

It's just found a bunch of tracking cookies so far.

Which command do I use to ping websites in the commad prompt? I'm very inexperienced at using it.

run > cmd

Code:

ping www.yahoo.com -n 30
this will ping yahoo.com for 30 hops (tries)

Oh ok thanks .

I'll do it soon. I can't right now because i'm (very slowly) downloading an E3 video. It takes sooooooo long to get a 3-4 minute video at 15kb/s .

So once this is done i'll give it a whirl. I'm expecting to get a good ping you know. I can play online games at the moment and my ping is normal, usually around 50. However, if my dads on his laptop and he does as little as loads a webpage or does a google search, my ping in-game will go up to the 600-700 region for a few minutes.

So yeah, i'm expecting a low ping, but it doesn't mean its working properly.

Ok.

The AVG scan finished. 5 hours, 9 minutes and 48 seconds. One and a half million files scanned . I got it to check absolutely everything. No infections, no spyware. And 35 tracking cookies.

I just pinged google and it was 50-60the entire time except the first 3 or so where Firefox was still refreshing this page and my ping was up in the thousand region.

I'm as clueless now as I was before .

Thanks for the help so far.

Sounds like your line is really squeezed if loading a page makes your ping go into the 1000s. That BT Homehub is definately lying.

Hmm thats something i'd not considered. A lying homehub.

Well, the past 2 weeks when its been on and off because of what i'm assuming was a faulty socket-hub cable (its not disconnected since I changed the cable), the Homehub has always had varying values for the download speeds. Its sometimes been as low as what I actually get, and sometimes a lot higher, in the 1000-2000 range. Now that I've changed the cable its gone up to what its supposed to be at, ~5,500kb/s.

I don't suppose there's some obscure setting in XP that would cause a severe chokepoint somewhere that would cause only a fraction of the broadband to be utilised?

Or maybe even a setting in the Homehub that would cause only a fraction of the broadband to be sent on. Oh wait. It does it with both routers doesn't it. I'm using the Netgear at the moment.

I'm really grasping at straws now . When I was on the phone to BT they did a line check and said it was fine. So i'm having to assume that nothings changed on their end. Like i said the change in my internet was sudden and for no reason whatsoever. One day it just started disconnecting, and then started going really slow whenever it re-connected. Now the connection problems seem to have been fixed.

The only other thing i can think is they have limited your speed from the exchange.

Also if you download alot of torrents or stuff some service providers packet shape too.
If i was you i would see if they will replace your router and then you know for sure its the line that is giving you a crappy connection.

Use this to see how far from the exchange you are - http://www.samknows.com/broadband/

I never download any torrents. I don't like them. However my little brother does every now and then when he wants some music. I keep telling him not to though. I just don't like them.

The map says there's an exchange in the nearest village, about 1 mile away.

I wonder if they are limiting it. We had to renew the subscription around the time it started, and as far as I know dad got the same thing again. I had wondered if it was that. However since it was also randomly disconnecting all the time up until yesterday I of course assumed there was a fault somewhere.

However as far as I know there's no BT subscription for crap broadband. They're all the same in terms of bandwidth pretty much. And if they have been aware of his damn illegal (yet infrequent) torrents then shouldnt they have warned us or something? So we could ban him from using the damn thing entirely.

As for replacing the router, i've tried it with 2 different ones (the Homehub and a several year old Netgear) and I get the same result. Maybe a complete replacement of all the hardware would help though yeah.

Sorry it sounds as though i'm being deliberately awkward. I've tried swapping everything for something else and now it seems like everything *should* be working perfectly. I'm completely out of ideas.

It could very well be an exchange issue itself. I had a similar problem a few years ago and it "magically fixed itself" after a lot of complaining to my ISP.

Yeah if you exchange is only a mile away then you should have fine speeds. Also depends how many people are connected to that one.

Does seem like you have been limited somewhat, also you may have gone over the monthly download limit.
Bt normally have consistent speeds, and don't tend to drop anytime throughout the day.
Also the line check, only checks the line is working not how fast your connecting or your download speeds.

I would get back onto BT and see if they will send you a new router out,the only reason to do this is to prove that there is no fault on your end so they will send an engineer to the exchange (which normally takes two weeks in bt case)

+ make sure ya bro ain't downloaded while your both connected as you probally know he will be sucking bandwidth.

Well we shouldn't have gone over any download limit, because as far as I know we don't have one. But yes it seems like it's very limited (as you can tell from when the ping went to 1000 because of a simple page refresh).

I think phoning BT again until they send someone out seems like the best idea, yeah. Oh there was one more thing I wanted to try that Titch mentioned.

Titch wrote:

I didn't do that before because there's only 1 PC here. But then I remembered I have a 360 so i'll disconnect this and connect the 360 and try downloading something. It doesn't give me a transfer rate on there but i'll be able to tell if its going slowly. If it does go slowly then I guess that rules out a virus on my machine. Unless of course its gone and infected both of the routers somehow.

Well I just unplugged the comp and plugged in the 360, found a random game trailer and started downloading it (70Mb). It should've gone up a % or two every few seconds at my 'usual good download speed' (about 512kb/s) seeing as how 1% is less than 1Mb. However it took a few minutes to get past 1%. I think that counts as slow. However i'd obviously prefer something that could tell me how fast its going.

Just did another speed test with the homehub. I wanted to see what the homehub said today because i'd not checked its transfer rates since the first speed test yesterday. The hub is lying even more today.

https://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g2/Spidery_Yoda/speedtest2.jpg

Umm. Ignore all the crap in the system tray on this latest one. I did a 'normal startup' to get the AV stuff working properly for the scans. So i have 4 years worth of crap showing up.

Ok now i'm angry.

Just on the phone to bt.

Me: The internet is slow

bt: You've gone over your download limit so we've been limiting it

Me: We payed extra for a contract without download limits

bt: *checks* So you did
How angry am I right now? Very angry right now .

*******************

Ok. The guy just phoned back after consulting his colleagues. He says there IS no limit in place and he just thought there was because 135k is what they limit it to when they place a limit.

He said its a fault in the line and it'll be fixed within 48 hours. I'll believe that when I see it .

You know I wonder something. I wonder if that was their way of covering up the fact that they HAVE been limiting us. Wouldn't suprise me.

Either way it wasn't my fault. I knew it. But Bt were always just like 'oh try restarting it. You've obviously set it up wrong' etc etc.

I hate the lot of them. Completely useless.

Ok. Now this is just getting ridiculous. Dad phones them again. Apparently there IS a limit placed on our line because apparently we've been using our unlimited downloads too much. So they've placed a 135k limit on our line.

This is ridiculous.

Several things:

Why didn't they tell us we were using it 'too much'?

Why didn't they tell us 3 weeks ago when they put the limit on?

Why did it happen in the same weekend we renewed our year long contract?

Why wasnt there any mention of it when I phoned 3 weeks ago asking about our slow internet?

Why did that guy just a few hours ago tell us that there was no limit in place after all (after telling us there was) and saying there was a fault in the line instead? IE why did he tell us a blatant lie.

This is just.. i'm not even sure how to describe it.

We've been given yet another phone number to phone up tomorrow at 8 in the morning.
