A friend of a friend has asked me to slap together a website for a semi-charitable organisation.

I've got a really good idea for the look of the site. And I think it would be possible to 'simulate' what I want in Photoshop. However, I'm shite at Photoshop and all my attempts so far have looked really crappy. (no, I'm not gonna post 'em here - they're that crappy)

Anyhoo, what I need is some ragged-edged torn-out textured piece-of-paper graphics to use as frames for blocks of text and images - if that makes any sense.

Anyone skilled enough in Photoshop to put together a quick guide to achieving what I want?

Karmaz for anything I use.

I can't really make a guide, but I could design it for you for free, if you want to.

Thanks for the offer, but I'd really rather like to figure out some 'technique' I can use to easily put something together as and when I need it. It doesn't have to look OMG site-of-the-year professional (though I am something of a perfectionist, so it ain't gonna be crap either).

Make the shadow distance 0, size 10-15. See what that looks like, the down and to the right shadows always look wrong.

EDIT: Host your psd somewhere and I'll play with it.

I've ditched the drop shadow complete now and uploaded a slight larger (and clearer) version - see edit above.

And the psd is huuuuuuge (well, 22.5MB).

Oh, and this is only a test - I'll be working on getting the shape a little better, maybe making the rough torn edges a little clearer...

Angle:90* Distance:5 Size:12 Opacity:50%.

Makes it pop quite nicely.

lol nvm about the PSD for now then, you can always bung it on rapidshare if you want help with it.

EDIT: Another way of getting a little more variation on it, make a new layer on top, filter > render > clouds. Invert it, set to Overlay and crank the layer opacity way down. Ctrl click on the paper layer, ctrl+i to invert the selection then delete, will get rid of all the excess on the clouds layer.

Sweet, yeah, I tried Angle 90 and that does look loads better - I'll use that when I do some final runs.

The PSD is so big 'cos I always work at like 1000dpi and then reduce down for export.

I shall have to give this a try.

Hehe 1000 is a bit excessive for web stuff

You could get away with 72, or 100-300 if you want it relatively high.
