Actually, it wasn't that they threatened him, but rather that Texas law gives you the right to degend a neighbours property with lethal force.

Or so I heard.
yeah, but only if he had been explicitly told by his neighbour to do so, i.e. keep an eye on his property.

Like they say: don't mess with texas.
He told the 911 operator that his neighbor asked him to look after his house while he was away.  After the shooting, he did tell the police he feared for [his safety].

As to how insane it is.  Maybe, from your perspective.  There was another incident here, a few years back.  There was an accident downtown.  One man rear-ended the other man.  The man in front was a native of New York city, visiting Austin.  The man in the back was a native Texan and Austinite.  When the accident happened, the man in front (the New Yorker), jumped out of his car and started to move toward the rear car, yelling insults and threats.  Apparently, this is not an uncommon way to react in NYC, I would not know.  The Austinite, seeing the man moving toward him in  a threatening manner and screaming insults and threats, pulls out his concealed pistol and shoots him in self-defense.  No charges were filed.  Insane? Maybe, depending on your point of view.

When in an area you are not native to, there will always be cultural differences.  You need to be aware of what those differences are.  Too many Americans go abroad and think that they are entitled to play by the same rules they do at home, regardless of where they are; sometimes, culture can change a lot here in the US from state to state.

And yes, Don't Mess With Texas may have been an anti-littereing campaign, but it carries many meanings.
I think I have just decided not to visit Texas. I mean, if you people start shooting just because someone is screaming at you, what will you do if something really bad happens ? Grenades ? Full auto ?

Maybe I am totally wrong here, but to me it seems as if people are getting more and more violent lately, up to a point were people are killed for nothing, literally. I mean, how can you justify taking someone's life because he "approached" you ?
The more I think about it, the more I believe that the term "culture of fear" is actually fitting. At the slightest instance, people are pulling out guns and start shooting. For what, I ask you ?

The gun nuts may be right on this, but maybe even they are not taking it far enough, its time to rewrite the constitution and take the right to bear arms to the next level and make it mandatory for every man, woman and child to carry a concealed weapon at all times and to be able to use said weapon under cases of provocation in which they see fit.

Some one cuts in front of you in the line at the supermarket = provocation

Some one parks in your usual parking space = provocation

The fat bloke that sits in front of you at the cinema blocking part of the screen = provocation

Now wait you liberal pusses before you write this off as the mad ramblings of man who lives in his mums basement and spends his day on his knees vigorously polishing his weapon while flicking through the pages of Solider of Fortune, think of the benefits.

1. Crime would fall dramatically along with the ever growing prison population, roughly at the same rate the population would be falling.

2. No more poor people because we all know that poor people are criminals, see section 1

3. A massive kick start to USA failing industry, mainly in the fields of gun making, ammo and coffins.

4. The presidential race would no longer come down to the dodgy vote count in Florida, because after a few years of this new policy the saying of "one man, one vote" would truly become a reality (probably a man from Texas would be the one left with this vote)

But what about the implications for the world I hear you scream, well fear not my Euro friends because as we know America leads by example      and all other country will soon follow suit in this new policy, with mostly likely Britain being the first to follow.

The benefits of this would be wondrous.

1. An end to our reliance on fossil fuels, because as the worlds population dwindles under the sound of heavy calibre gunfire, so would our reliance of fossil fuels.

2. An end to starvation, see 1

3. Which finally leads to the end of global warming, HA stick that in your pipe and smoke it Al Gore.

4. Soon our children (if there was any left) would be able to walk the streets in safety.

All this we can owe our thanks to Texas and the NRA

Option A) I use the perfect stun ray and the police show up and arrest him.  He gets a b/e charge and is sentenced to six years.  He's out in three on good behavior.   See where I'm going with this?

Option B) Death ray.  My state has a law protecting me if I decide to protect myself and my family with deadly force.  This asshole will never torment my family again.

Since one doesn't know an intruders true intentions, I don't really see how option A is a good choice.  I'm not willing to bet my life or anyone I know and care about on any strangers' (let alone criminals') intentions.  If you are... Well that's your choice, but I don't think it is a wise one.

Lets say I go with option a and the psycho gets out and comes after my wife again.  Do I stun him again?  Do I keep stunning him?  Do I move my family, upend my life and hide from this guy?
So you can't know the intruder's intentions but you can know he has a perfect memory?

Further, you honestly think if he repeatedly pursues your family the law will give him 3 years?

I think you are over-reacting more than a little.  The incidents are actually very low.  You are falling for one of the great problems of our age; 24 hour news.  Thanks to the need to kill all 24 hours with 'news' that will keep you watching their commercials, every little thing from all over the world is sent into your TV.  Thanks to the internet, you get exposed to every single thing that happens-anywhere in the world, anytime.

These things have always happened.  The problem is now you can see them.  There is nothing wrong with Texas; some weird stuff has happend lately.  Millions of us manage to live here quite peacefully and not get shot.

Weak man.  Way to twist it.  If you are going to do that then.... There is no such thing as a Death ray with a stun setting.  Police response times are too slow.  I will still shoot to kill.

Except that mine was a hypothetical about whether you would choose to kill someone if you could protect yourself without doing so.  You twisted so you got to kill them and ultimately had to do it to protect yourself.  You essentially rationalised a situation where you could kill them, and changed it to that.

No, the bottom line is that you don't know why there is an intruder there.  You can bet your life on it, I won't.

What about the possibility that it's an alien visitor and you're sparking an inter-galactic war that'll result in the end of the human race?

Statistically, it's about as probable.

Personally, I would be willing to risk it.  It's more likely for me to be crushed by a falling jumbo-jet than for that to be the case.
